This race has been in my calendar for ages. I had looked forward to it for months.
We had a big group of friends together and all agreed to go over and have some hard racing and good times.
Myself and Jenny, Gav and Vanina, Garry Millburn and Fiona (who was to be head bottle bitch), Andy Davidson and Naomi Hansen, as well as Kyle Ward, and our other good mate Jodie Willet.

Everything was set for a great trip.
I should have seen the signs inn advance though. First, Garry crashes badly on his Euro road trip, and rules himself out.

Husky.
I do like this race.
Last night it was raining. I was getting more and more nervous. I rode it last year, had mechanicals, cramped, bad day out, but still enjoyed it. I do remember that it was a really dry day / week preceeding, and yet it was muddy and wet.
This year, it was tipping it down the night before. To say I was apprehensive about the weather was an understatement.

Race day dawned, and it was not raining. I and Jenny set up our turbo trainers in the car park and did a good warm up anticipating a fast start.

At last a race that I finish, instead of crashing out!
Sooo,
Gun goes, and we're off. All of us together. As usual, a couple of guys try and shoot off the front to try and get a lead into the hill. They are chased down very quickly. So, going into the bottom of the hill, everyone is together, through the slop and muck! Ben (Mather) and Matt (Flemming) hit the hill hard. I'm in about 6th wheel and planning on taking it fairly easy. Justin Morris (Marathon MTB) jumps clear and sits in 3rd about 5m behind Ben and Matt.

After crashing badly at the National Champs in Adelaide and wrecking my bike, the guys at Jet Cycles in Sydney worked really hard with Specialized to get me sorted as quickly as possible. A huge thanks to them for all thier hard work - and patience with me as I stressed.

The bike was finished at 3pm on Friday arvo, I loaded it onto the back of the car and drove to 'berra.

Dont normally write a blog, but enjoyed this race so much thought I would.

Lots of Nobmobbers there, I didnt really say hi, so should make more of an effort. Note to self.

A-Grade startline was like a who's-who of NSW MTB racing. Awesome to see such a field at a clubby. Mitchell, Trenton, Pete Hatton, True, the two Gav's, Chops, plus a bunch of other fit looking dudes. Oh, an yours-truely.
If you can ride with this bunch, there is no race in Australia that you couldnt hold your own.

So near but so far.....

oh man! I felt great, attacked on the 2nd loop and was leading the race by nearly a minute at the start of the 3rd loop. I checked my shoulder and saw the chase group. By the bottom of the big climb (the water crossing) they had caught me. I couldnt go with Rowney or Miller, but managed to keep the distance from growing. From the top, I was flat out, and saw 2nd place the whole way home. 15seconds ahead, and I could do nothing about it!
Still - delighted with 3rd.
It was a hell of a race and one of my favourites.
