Hello,
Would any of you know of a group like NobMob who organise friendly road riding? I have a couple of friends who want to take it up and have asked me where to go - I know nothing about it... one knows what he is doing and the other is a newbie - they both live on the Northern Beaches...
Thank you!

The correct term is scuuuuummmmmmm.

Stay away from the roads on your bike, they are too dangerous!

Just an excuse for grown men to take drugs, wear lycra and shave their legs.

Chistine, get them to contact Supreme Cycles, they have a group that go out a few time a week.

organise social rides, I think Renegade (Lane Cove) have the bigger variety of skill / endurance levels and both are well worth a look. Just make sure you tell your friends to up their life insurance and I always found a peice of soft foam across the back of your helmet worked well, softens the blow of the apple core that car load of hoons just pegged at you!

Renegade Cycles run Saturday morning rides. Details are on the web; from memory it's 6:30am from their shop in Lane Cove. They're very well organised and there are three groups depending your ability level. You can keep up with the slowest one with almost no cycling practice at all. (One of the ride leaders is a serious XC racer).

I used to do the Randwick Botany rides from Centennial. They were a bit more chaotic, but good if you wanted an intense workout before work. They spend a lot of time on roads like South Dowling and hence rely on their size and visibility to make up for the speed differential. Mind you, it's not always that much of a differential - the pace on the flats hits 40-50km/h quite often.

BikeNorth also have regular rides at a variety of paces. I haven't been to any of those. There will be other local BUG rides depending on where you live.

You may mock the road riders, but those bastards flying up hills will be spending a lot of their training time putting in road miles!

If anyone's ever keen to strap on a pair of slicks and hit the roads, then give me a pm. Smiling
I find that riding on roads helps to develop muscles and fitness which compliments MTB riding.

i agree that road riding is great for fitness, it is also easier and more convenient for myself (live in quakers hill) as i live a minimum of 30-45mins drive from any mtb trail, so road riding is easier, leave home, ride 60-70kms and back with 2-2.5hrs. To a do a 60km mtb ride i would be out more than half the day with travel and prep time included. However i feel that road km's are equal to half that of mtb km's. ie if i ride 40km on the road this is like 20km off road, in terms of overall effect, so generally my road rides are much longer than mtb rides. I ride to work also which helps with fitness, 40km per day roughly 3 times per week. I do have a dedicated road bike though so it makes it easier as i dont have to change tyres to slicks on the mtb or anything.

I have sent them all the information and now there is no excuse for either of them not to be out there - until they see the light and swap over...
mind you, I fell off that many times today maybe I should consider going with them!!
