Or we could do Donnybrook as in this comment?

Just that would give us at least two trails to see.

Yeah, but it says its only a couple of k's long. Is that right? But still, the fact that it is downhill makes it look attractive. Laughing out loud What do you think we should do? Have you been there before?

Bruce, you have been around this neck of the woods before. Any ideas?

Rob's picture

... that it's a good downhill. I know it's short, but then you have to ride back round (on the road, sadly) to collect your car.

Hassens Walls is up around the same place and again, hear that's nice.

Don't worry too much about me anyhow - will be out looking around a little North of Lithgow that day and may not be back for 4pm.

Hey Liam,

Havent been anywhere other than the Lisdale track, however I would be more than keen to have a look at Donnybrook.

Two consecutive days at Lisdale might be a bit much.

Only looking for a fairly easy ride on Saturday arvo, planning a huge road ride for the morning.

Your call, will be happy just to ride!

Cheers
Bruce

You could try the Convict Trails around Mt York - Down Lockyer's Pass (very, very fun) and up Lawson's Long Alley (not as fun). About 14km all up. If you want to fill in more time the ride up and down either Cox's Road (Technical) or Berghoffer's pass (easy).

A bit further away is the Old Coach Road & Glow Worm Tunnel on the Newnes Plateau. Park at the Glow Worm Tunnel carpark, ride back up the road then down Deanes Siding onto the Old Coach Road. The first section after the gate is a bit loose and technical then it smooths out to a great DH run. You then turn left and head up the old railway line to the glow worm tunnel (take lights and WALK your bikes through here). About 20km (maybe 26km) I think and all the climbing is very gentle as it is along the old railway line.

Alchemist, I don't want to get too adventurous on a ride that I don't know much about. Plus we don't have all the final numbers in yet. So I can't go making too much up and get too fancy.

I know where this Donnybrook place is, as my brother's house is not far from there at Bowenfels, about 1 km short of Lithgow Main Street turnoff.

Bruce, I am happy to ride Donnybrook - both up and down the hills. Preferably with the uphills first! Smiling But anyhoo we could still play car swaps to shuttle up and back if we have to. Come on Rob! You can make it! It would be a shame to be in the area and miss out. We can limit it to only a couple of hours just for you?

Hey Ditty... I'm loving the Alchemist's suggested ride down then back up through the tunnel.

After all, anything that involved getting your lights out must be fun Eye-wink

Erm, but true, see your point also - am not going to push for anything (see my other post) and agree one doesn't want to have two days of wondering aimlessly Eye-wink

Point taken about walking in the tunnel too, I can imagine how slippery and stuff it must be (although the imagination may be laid to rest soon - haven't visited yet, but it's one of the possible walks we have on the cards the day before).

Fair enough. Neither are too difficult to navigate.

There's a map if the Glow Worm Tunnel here http://www.railtrails.org.au/states/trails.php3?...

& the Mount York stuff here http://www.collitsinn.com.au/walks.html

Well worth putting these away for another trip or two.

... on the evening of the 31st (which I assume you are, if you're interested in the Sat arvo ride).

Apparently there's a show on:

Bonus!

Erm... if you're into that sort of thing. Think I'd rather have a quiet bit of food and tuck in early to be honest. Bloody hell - must be getting old or something Eye-wink

The next thing you know, Rob will be telling those "young" people next door to turn their music down. It's 8:00 in the evening for heaven's sake!!

I still think the Donnybrook XC / downhill trail is the way to go on Sat arvo. I think this connects up to a firetrail on the hilly outskirts to Lithgow's North. I am pretty sure we can make this ride work well. I will have my Lithgow topo map with me. So I think the details in my original Donnybrook post still stand.

Yes, Alchemist, we can pull that ride out of the bag on another day. I appreciate all the suggestions too. Eye-wink

Rob, thanks for the link. Yeeehaaarr!!! It says there is "supposed" to be some freestyle motocross on the Friday night. My brother and I might mosey on over there and check it out - time permitting. Now, where's my Akubra...

Flynny's picture

Hey all

Flynny here, I'm local and may be able to hook up with you guys to show you around Lidsdale Sunday morning.

I have a few commitments Saturday so probably wont be able to get to the preride.

The Donneybrook is more south of Lithgow. It's a good ride with a mix of every thing.
Fast Fire trail, a bit of climbing and some nice Single track that gets steep towards the end. Avoid the obvious turn to the right just after the single track crosses back onto the right side of the road (This is the strathlone track, fun but very short). Also watch your speed on the last bit it. A big rut straight down to a barbwire fence. Throw bikes over and head down to the high way, left or right crosses Private property and owners are not that fond of people wondering in.

If you want a longer ride and you are willing to ride up more then once (And it's not a hard ride, middle ring and 2 or 3 at the back) You can link it up with a few other trails to start then head back up for the Doonybrook.

2 of the easier options are:

1)The Town Houses Track. offers a nice run down rough fire road and steepish Single track. I haven't got a gsp of it yet but you take the road towards Braceys lookout and head right just before it goes back onto tar. Take the right fork just after the Single track starts and you are laughing. This comes out top of High St and you can either head back up the normal way or ride around and up the back road from Browns gap (Steeper but not too hard)

2)Channel 6.
Nice flowy ST with a nice rock garden and a bit of steepness near the end. The last bit can be a bit of a mze but all roads lead to Rome.
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1024432

It comes out behind the Small Arms factory and it's a quick spin across Wrights Rd to get back to the bottom of Hassans Walls road for the ride back up.

Anyway hope you all enjoy it.
