Looking at doing some exploring in the norther Sydney district. i know the GNW (great north walk) well in the Lane Cove park till you get to thornleigh but its unknown territory for me after that. Just wanted to know if it's worth riding up to berowra or further north or is it just mostly hike a bike?? Also is there any good riding to be had on the way to the basin area of Kuringai Chase NP.

I was thinking about riding the GNW to berowra then take the Berowra track then continue on to the Basin area. Anyone have any knowledge of these areas?? was looking for a 50-70k ride, but watever's good fun really..

Riding single track in National Park is not legal unless designated legal. Most of the GNW is "Walk".

Here are some rides around Hornsby:
-North Turramurra (see this site) - this is not too bad, drains pretty well.
-Firetrails on the western side of Deburges Bridge in Lane Cove National Park. Bit too wet after rain in LCNP. It will be messy at the moment in there.
-Berowra Valley which some locals call "Quarry Road Track" as it goes to Quarry Rd Dural steep down and then up again. It's a hill fest, but drains well. Good if your fit. http://nobmob.com/rides/berowravalleyquarry
-An option is to head North along fire trail from Stewart/Clarinda at Hornsby till you get to Galston Rd. Thats not a bad ride and drains well (rocky, not much clay or sand, and nice bushland and views). Nice in the afternoon as your following the contour along the western side of the Hornsby plateau so you get a bit of sun. I generally continue on from here up to Montview Oval (earmarked as potential MTB Park location of the future) , and then you can do the fire trails (which are very disjointed) off Somerville Rd and then head back to the car at Stewart/Clarinda via flat and sealed Galston Rd (has cycle lane) which is much quicker than the FT. The fire trail from Stewart/Clarinda north tends to flow a bit better heading north, riding back along it south is a bit harder than riding it north.

I think try North Turramurra: http://nobmob.com/rides/northturramurra is a good start. I generally start at McRae Place and then ride west to Gloucester, out on the point a bit, then back. Then you can add Bobbin Head fire trails etc if your still keen. This ride is not bad at night too.
