Secure bike parking in Sydney

Folks,

I'm wondering if there's any secure bike parking available in the CBD. The parking at my work location (201 Sussex St) is fairly pitiful and although the security guard (aka parking attendant) claims it's secure I am highly suspicious.

Further, a lot of the available parking in the city is not well suited to modern dual suspension mountain bikes.

Now here's some bike parking taken seriously:

North Sydney bike parking

Some good information on this site related to North Sydney Council including bike maps and long term bike plan.

Cycling Promotion Fund has a page of information on the Cycling in the City programme to encourage people to commute to work on bikes and employers to provide secure parking for cycle commuters. I'm going to inquire with my employer as to whether they are willing to participate in this with the intention of pressuring the building into providing better facilities.

I'd be interested in thoughts on this, though I know it's a bit removed from the NoBMoB philosophy.

Regards,
Doug

Has nobody any thoughts on this?

in the city it would be very rare to find a parking attendant / building manager that doesn't have a little room hidden away somewhere that they put things into. I've always found it is amazing what a bottle of scotch will do to gain access to said places for storing things, long or short term.

Good luck with the pushing the boss angle.

Sorry... yes... thoughts...

Well, at first I thought, really, is a Sydney underground (I assume) car park so unsafe?

On the street, in some of the more undesirable neighbourhoods I would think a little about locking up and leaving a bike, but don't think there would be any worries in a car park.

I mean, there are probably cameras everywhere? The public maybe don't have admittance?

Get yourself a decent lock. 'cos I used to live in London I have an Abus Granit X-Plus which is top of the line and supposed to be pretty much indestructible, and use it in combination with a decent cable to thread through the other bits. Then always fix in a busy place in view of a camera and take the seat/pump/etc. with me. This is probably overkill for most of Sydney, or am I wrong?

Get yourself some decent insurance too if it's a worry (I have Australian Unity household cover with the bike as a named item).

Do the above and feel safe and sound Smiling

FWIW, I don't suppose there was much response as most MTB riders tend not to ride in the city. It's a shame. Our client is about to move to Ryde where there is no decent public transport so I'd love to commute by bike. However, I'm sure doing so would be a death wish in Sydney so we'll have to see how it goes. Bring on those promised cycle ways... not just in the city but all over Sydney!

The building (Olivetti Building on William Street) at my previous job had dedicated bike racks in the carpark, which was pretty nice. Amazingly, they charged the company a substantial amount for us to use them.

I had no qualms about leaving some fairly nice bikes down there - but then it had cameras and you needed a keycard to get down there. Plus, all of the pollies left their cars down there, and imagine the uproar if one of those got stolen...

Broadway Shopping Centre appears to have a whole lot of new bike parking spots in its carpark, but I don't think anyone knows about them - they're always empty, and the out-the-front spots are still heavily trafficked.
