i think my bottom bracket is a shimano octalink but not sure unless i take it off, and was wondering if it is compatable with any bb if i was to upgrade it or do i need to get another shimano. the bike is an avanti barracuda 2004 or 05 model- it had the red squarish frame with manitou axel fork and also how do i tell if my derailluer is a long or short cage?

if you have 3 chainrings, and you have never changed your rear derailler, it will be a long cage. If you are thinking of replacing it, you'll need another long cage (assuming you are still running 3 chainrings).
God knows what BB came on your bike, but mate - google is your friend. The original spec will be out there somewhere. t'internets an enormous thing. Give it a good search.
