Hey all... at this point I'm not really sure I can make this. Is there someone more local who rides around the Lagoon and it's catchment (Oxford Falls & Red Hill) more than I do (which wouldn't be hard - haven't been in this area since the NPWS rangers asked us not to ride Oxford Falls).

@Rob. I do ride in the area and can go to this meeting. Anything specific you want mentioned?

@PS... excellent, thanks for that.

I'm not really sure what it's about but when someone from the council invites someone from the MTB community along to such a meeting it would be silly not to go.

I think this is one of those 'values' meetings where everyone gets to say what they... erm... value about the area. Clearly many bike riders enjoy riding around the lagoon and it's catchment, and as long as the trails are properly designed this should have zero impact on the lagoon itself. So long as they get that point then all good.

FWIW people can say the same on the online forum (this is nothing to do with NPWS - there is a separate forum for the lagoon) but it's also good to have someone there to report what gets said about bike riders in the area, and defend their name if someone starts trying to dish the dirt (pardon the pun). It's important not to let mis-information about MTB propagate at such meetings. If you're up for that! Eye-wink

It was just a community consultation process where they asked different questions and got us to move round the different tables for each question. That way they got the different interest groups to talk to each other and establish if there was any conflict between the various groups.
As it was mainly about the on water activities most of the people present were local residents or directly interested in the lake. The locals wanted dredging and constant opening of the lagoon even though that doesn’t seem to be the natural cycle of things.
Had a short conversation with a council employee who wasn’t that favorable towards mountain biking in the catchment areas like oxford falls and red hill. The council people acknowledged that most of the sedimentation increase occurred 30-40 years ago when there was poorly controlled land clearing and development. The old POM contains that information and indicates that sedimentation has decreased significantly in recent times. Guess that means there isnt any evidence that riding mountain bikes in the catchment is a problem.
There was one bird watching guy commenting on the new multi use track extension suggesting that the walkers wanted a narrow track and "the bike riders wanted a wider track" and the council then built a really wide track. Told him that cyclists would be happy with a narrow track for the same reason he preferred narrow tracks.
So overall not much to be gained from this POM although would be nice if we got some comments during the community consultation process at the http://yoursaywarringah.com.au/narrabeenlagoonpom link congratulating them on the work to complete the multi use trail. Suggest we also point out that the trail should not go through sensitive areas and does not need to follow the edge of the lake to be effective for cyclists.
Suggest we also indicate that we think riding on well designed trails in the catchment area is sustainable.

Also they want to see young people at the next consultation meeting on 25th Nov. So if your young and want to keep riding in the catchement areas let them know via feedback on the web page.
