What size bearings for my Gary Fisher 29er?

Hello all,

I've had my Gary Fisher Paragon 2009 29er for about 6months now, and in that time, she's seen her fair share of sand, mud and capital punishment.

I am in the process of getting the tools to replace the BB bearings and rear hub bearings, as well as the head race bearings (at least I think that's what they're called).

Is there any way one can deduce what size bearings I need before dismantling the bike? I doubt my LBS will be overly keen to provide me with the accurate information, because I'm doing them out of business (could be wrong).

Or do I have to dismantle, measure, reassemble, order, wait dismantle and replace?

I'll be ordering a "Hope Bottom Bracket Bearing Tool" to help remove the bearing from the BB, but not overly sure what I need for the rear hub.

thanks..

Six months only and you're changing all bearings?! Seems a bit premature but that's just me. Maybe disassemble your hub etc and see if the bearings feel dodgy first before spending.

If you partially disassemble your parts you should be able to see the bearings. Most bearings should have a number on the rubber seals. I did this with my hub last week and then just went to the local bearing shop. It is much quicker than waiting and paying for shipping from overseas.

Further to that, Enduro bearings are available locally!

oh also with the Hope BB tool? Will that only work with Hope BB'S?

Premature? Moi? Who have you been speaking to (it's all true though)?

I'm thinking it might take a month or so to source the parts (and tools) and I've got highland fling coming up, so expecting more wear and tear.

Oh and you've got a 'local bearing shop' (the alternate LBS). Do you have their name to hand? There's not many bearing shops in Surry Hills (although no shortage of lube shops :-|)

Cheers for the reply.

Well I live in Hornsby and the shop was 1km away Smiling Probably not much help to you!

Had a quick look in the yellowpages. Maybe head down to Mascot?

As for tools. I just tapped the bearing out with a screwdriver from the other side of the hub.....probably not ideal....but did the job.

Thanks Buck, appreciate the research. Oh and Hornsby is on the way to Terry Hills ish, so gets my vote!

Re tapping the bearing out... yeah, I saw a youtube video of some Welsh guys doing something similar with a work bench. There was a workbench with a hole in it which was big enough to allow the axle through, but not the bearing... They simply put the axle in so it was resting on the bearing and tw*ted the axle and presto... it came off.

May end up doing something similar.

There is also a bearing shop at Brooky called ABC Bearings if you don't have any luck at the other ones listed.

Thanks Jase. Thanks for 'bear-ing' with me and providing this info.
