I will be needing to buy lights, so that I can do some training during the week.
Any suggestions, specs etc

That's a bit of an open question Staffie. Let us know how much you want to spend. For decent lights typically anything upwards from $300 will get you a decent set. Personally I'd go with a pair of Ayups http://ayup-lights.com.au but there's plenty others out there. Pretty sure you'll get a lot of different answers.

Expensive? Yes, a little more than other things you can get out there. Good? no, excellent. They are bullet proof, Ay-Up stand by their lights offering after-market upgrades at very reasonable prices (there is a thread about that somewhere) and everything about them is just so neat.

K-Lite. Kerry gets more Lux (more important than a theoretical lumin rating) per weight than any other light on the market at a price that beats most. Google cncdelite

I am very happy with my Ay-ups but if were buying new lights now I would consider these ones too. http://www.cellbikes.com.au/Bike-Accessories/Rec...

I've got a set of Lupine Piko 3 lights, and I love them. Can be mounted on the handlebars with a handle-bar mount converter. They're a bit pricey at $400AUD each ... but well worth it from my perspective.
Check them out here
Looks like Virtuascape is a dealer in Aus.

They got a great review on MTBR, which is ultimately why I decided to go with them.

Sorry - these just got snapped up - so I dont have any for sale!

I have a BRAND NEW set of Ayups for sale if you are keen.

They were won as a prize at the 3 Ring Circus and have been in the box, in the kitchen ever since.
Drop me a note if keen.

I got one of these as a second light for the Jet Black 24 and ended up being that impressed I used it as my primary

They have them on sale every so often for $80 which is an absolute bargain. I believe they're a re-badge of one of the mainstream brands, I certainly saw a lot of them out there at the event. Very bright and they just work, I can't comment of their longevity though

I have the same lights they are great for the price but the 1400 lumen are better again if they are cheap

Can you place these lights on your helmet? Also, is it better to have lights helmet or handlebar mounted or both? Looking for advice?

Deal Extreme have both the 900 and 1400 magic shine lights very cheap, free delivery too!

I've been using the 1400 for around a year now and it has proven very good, however the mounting system of rubber o-rings is a bit wobbly on the bars. I've moved it onto my helmet with a velcro strap mount (which came with a Niteflux light which stopped working) and that is just brilliant! However it is on the large size and at full power only lasts 2-3 hours.
I personally prefer helmet mounted lights for the ability to light up where you look. Bar mounted lights I would suggest for a secondary set after helmet. With bar mount for instance when peddaling up a crest or waterbar on a hill, your light is shining in the tree tops and if you wobble your bars around when climbing your lightbeam wobbles too.

I use the MagicShine 1400 on my handle bars by fabricating a holder from an old plastic bike computer mount. It's primitive but solid, the beam doesn't move around at all over bumps. I agree that the rubber mounts are rubbish but the light it's self is wicked. For the cost it's even wicked-er.

I can post a pic of said hash up if needed.

I bought my light (7 UP $340) from Trout Lights in the UK http://troutie.com/. Beautifully put together. Powerful. However, due to the import restrictions of Li-on batteries from the UK to Aus, I had a bottle battery set up made with K-Lite http://www.cncdelite.com/ and I have to say Kerry's communication and service was excellent. The 7-UP Trout light I have is mounted on my bars and if I decide to purchase a helmet light in the future, I'll likely purchase this from Kerry's business.

Troutie and K-lite run pretty much similar internals 'cept Kerry uses less LEDs which gives him all the light you need but keeps the housing lighter and the run time longer. Both guys are great to deal with.
Trout lights for super bright, burn your eyes out light aimed at shorter more intense rides
K-lite for brightness at a weight and run time suitable for more XC and trail riding

Saying that I do DH with my K-lites.
Saying that I use to DH with my old 5w vista sticks (all be it much slower)
This is some runs from a few years ago. Pretty sure it's a 15w vista on my head and a cat eye triple shot 250l on the bars

This seems to be a very good combo. More light than you'll ever need.
Shipping is on the expensive side, but the customer service is top notch.

My new ay-ups arrived today, I cant believe how small they are and the amount of light they put out. I got the narrow and intermediate for my helmet and intermediate and all rounder for on the bike. Well packaged in the POD and fantastic quality, great Ozzie product and thats coming from a kiwi.
now to tackle some Sydney tracks at night.

hehe, I'd say welcome to the dark side muzza, but that's not really appropriate. Eye-wink

You mean these?

Look good for being seeing while commuting but a little dim for off road use. 80lm isn't a lot.

Thanks Rob

Appreciate your thoughts
