Thanks for the heads up, made me go and check my statement after buying from them a couple of weeks ago.
Someone used my details last year to purchase 4k of airline tickets...that bill was a shock!

PayPal is the way to go these days, more and more online places are now accepting it, keep your CC details to yourself

I don't see why people think that PayPal is any more or less safe than any other merchant. They completely take the pi$$ with exchange rates also. Mind you, how is that any different than your average credit card supplier?

Hmmm... carry on Eye-wink

I have used PP twice and don't like it at all. When I use my CC on CRC I always get charged exactly what the prices are. I still get the CC fee though. When I used PP on CRC the exchange rates were crap and I still got a CC fee for currency exchange. I'll take the risk using my CC. I'll will be looking into the debit master card but so far it doesn't look any different as you can still overdraw your account so I don't see the point???

I was stung just under a month ago, but that time it was a test transaction of about 70c. The Card fraud people caught it, and said if it had gone through I'd probably have been hit for a big sting over the following couple of days. that card was cancelled and reissued with a new car with different number.

Having read the post was wary of CRC for some new bits, so went to Wiggle last night.
Today I was rung by the card fraud squad and informed of several transactions totaling near $4k - ouch
They canceled the card, and apparently I'll be reimbursed.
What caught their attention was air china flights and home depot purchases in the US.

This new card has only been used about 10 times. A couple of paypal transactions, optus recharge, some fuel, and wiggle & CRC.
CRC was a couple of weeks ago, and wiggle last night. Interesting co-incidence.
Anyway, I'll use paypal for my bike bits from here on and see how that goes.

Careful when using Paypal with Chain Reaction Cycles - you lose the ability to track your order online through the CRC website. The tracking ability only seems to work if you pay by credit card direct.

I prefer to use the CC, in my case it means you rack up the airmiles as well, esp on overseas transactions, which is helpfull. In a year I already have enough for rtn to the UK in Business class which is nice.

Could be a coincidence after using Wiggle and CRC recently but someone went shopping for 1500 euros on my CC. Be nice to know how the details are getting out there?

Sounds like the CRC problem from what I have read elsewhere. My credit card company called me Thursday last week to ask if I had just purchased from CRC via Paypal. Which I did and all was okay. They then checked and I had also used the card with CRC directly back in June 2010, so my card was canceled as it was within the "compromised period" according to the credit card company. One card down, one to go!!

@Loki - I thought the same thing re tracking when I first purchased via Paypal back in 2009. Back then I e-mailed CRC to ask why I had no order details on my existing account after I had just purchased and I was logged in. They told me a new CRC account was created under the Paypal e-mail address I used and they gave me the login details. When I purchased last week via Paypal, the order was again added to my now exiting "Paypal" CRC account.

You could try and recover your password using the "Forgotten Your Password" feature or just e-mail CRC.

I hope that it's only a coincidence but I got a call from my credit union reporting a possible credit card scam on my Visa debit card, which was immediately cancelled (1 week replacement period will suck!).
It's been used for a few CRC, Jenson USA and Torpedo7 purchases in recent months which now worries me with all warnings about PayPal as an alternative.

I should warn also about some hassles I'm having with a UK site called Active Sport (aka Mark Anthony Bikes Direct).
I did my payment a few days ago with PayPal and got charged VAT (UK version of GST) for some Fox Float Fluid Pillow packs and a Gonzo Extender for my airshock.
Their website had no warnings and the PayPal website included the VAT, so I contacted Active Sport to ask for it be refunded but I got blamed for having caused it all.
They kept saying that I should have used a credit card and that it was too late, as the goods had already been shipped.
I kept saying that there was no warnings and that they should refund it through PayPal.
After some messy and nasty emails I'm just going to let the Poms keep my 5 pounds VAT (about $8).

I've given up all hope on the small amount of money wasted but I got some satisfaction in abusing them fo their hard to understand e-mails (terrible punctuation and grammar).

Be warned if you try to use them and also be wary that they have an eBay website for bike parts.

PS: I've backtracked and found a CRC order that falls within the dates that my credit union nominated for the incident. Looks like CRC is now off my list for "approved suppliers".
