Weigh In Week 3.7 17th June 07

Mixed bag this week. Have struggled a little over the last two days with taking the healthy options. As with everyone else the rain is driving me stir crazy, am actually starting to get a little concerned about Coffs. I was hoping that all the riding last week would give me a good springboard from which I could launch into a couple of longer (read 40km +) rides this week and next week, then back off a little the week before. Obviously this hasn't happened and my fear is that whilst physically I am improving all the time, I won't have either the fitness or the saddle time to acheive my goal of "enjoying" the 50km at Coffs. On a more positive note the ridiculus profile that was on the site has been replaced with one that does look alot more enjoyable, although this is the 100km profile, I can only hope that the 50 is similar.

Sunday
Intake
Porridge
Fruit juice with fibre supplement
"Toad in the hole" dry pan fried (ie no oil at all)
Coffee no sugar

Kiwi fruit

Chicken & salad sandwich on wholegrain bread

No arvo tea

Chicken Pad see ew, by now you probably realise this is my favourite Thai dish.

Exercise
Nothing
2 1/2 hrs bucketing water out of my brothers flooded basement, up one floor to the laundry, this has gotta count for something, I know my back and legs were feeling it by the end.

Weigh in stats, first thing Sunday morning
99.8kg
101cm waist.

Yeah, happy with those numbers, as I said quiet a mixed bag this week. Don't know why I am so pleased with the below 100kg mark as this really wasn't a fixed goal. I got down a little lower than this just before Xmass last year but that was after 4 weeks of a herbal detox program where I basically ate nothing processed and and only one lot of "animal" product a week, can't belive I'm seeing similar results just by eating sensibly and upping my exercise. What's more I feel so much better for it. Really wasn't expecting anything near those results given the lack of regular exercise this week and the cravings I have had Friday and Saturday, most of which I did resist. I suppose most of this is a flow on from late last week and the continued benefits of being healthier and replacing flabby fat with increased muscle mass which burns more. My tree trunk thighs are slowly beginning to return to the firmness they had many years ago when I was racking up big K's on the road bike. Need a solid effort this week of regular "training" otherwise come the first weekend in July I'm gonna hurt alot.

John, don't know if you're still following this journey but the coffe no sugar is now a no brainer. My brother, whom I haven't seen since I started this, made me a coffee yesterday the way he always has, full cream milk and 2 sugars. I was tempted to throw it down the sink but didn't want to offend, and to be honest I have on occassions yearned for that sweet hit, so I drank it. Gotta say I really didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as my now regular no sugar skim milk version. Thanks, you threw down a challenge I didn't think I could make but it really hasn't been difficult at all.

Cheers

Nice one breaking the 100 mark, next goal break 100cm's?

Exposed-105's picture

does look tempting, don't remember the last time I was sub 100 for both, maybe my tape was stretched??

All jokes aside the next goal to reach will be the first I set, to enjoy Coffs. That said if this rain doesn't stop soon I think that will be difficult, next short term goal at the moment is to get back on the bike before I head to Coffs.

Cheers, and thanks for the support

Yes I'm still here Exposed and I'm glad to hear the no sugar thing worked for you too, it does get easy after 1 week and after 2 weeks it would take a serious effort to go back to adding sugar to your coffee.
Now about all that fruit juice you are drinking, most fruit juice has added sugar in it and lots of calories I prefer to drink water and eat the fruit that includes the fibre and fills you up more than fruit juice.
Good work on the 100kg mark, I think setting small achievable goals is the way to stay focused, so if you want to get to 85kg aim for 95kg first.
Bye John

You and your body are capable of absolutely anything, if you have the willpower and discipline to make it happen. Well done Exposed. Your next 100 will be a 100km ride mate! Laughing out loud

John, I am surprised noone else has commented on the fruit juice thing before, and the honey for that matter.

I'll explain / expand a little more. Without naming brands the juice I use is a generic brand breaky juice with no added sugar, just reconstituted juice and "flavour", no numbers here so hope its natural but never really understand why you need to add flavour to this sort of thing anyway. So no added sugar in this one.

That's "added sugar" taken care of. I am well aware that fruit juice is increadibly high in both calories and "natural sugars". When I say a glass of juice, its always less than 150ml. So that just leaves me with the concern over the calories, which at the moment I'm not worried about. I want to make sure I have the fuel to maintain the higher exercise levels. My original aim for this was to get healthier, to the point I enjoy Coffs, the catalyst for this was a "very" high cholesterol level. Its this high cholesterol level that has brought on the use of the fibre supplements, off which I use 2. The first is totally soluble and can be take with water. The other is unrefined psyllium husk which is meant to act as an absorber or sponge for cholesterol in the system. This stuff doesn't dissolve and resembles the husk of grass seeds, tastes pretty much the same as well I should imagine. Have tried it with just water but thats a no go so the other obvious choice would be milk but I am meant to be minimising "animal" products for cholesterol reasons, hence the continued use of the juice. Aside from that I am also conscious of not cutting out everything I enjoy. I have done this in the past and have struggled greatly after the first couple of weeks. This needs to be a life long change, not a quick fix.

Now for the contradiction to that. After Coffs I will probably cut calories fairly heavily for a week or two in an attempt to shit a little more of the bulge around the middle, then resume muscle conditioning. This I'll wait and see about though.

Again, thanks for the continued support and I happy to stand corrected on any of the above, I am certainly no nutritionist and am only going on what I have seen and heard from others.

Cheers

That's alright then, I'm no expert on nutrition either but I'll always give advice, on almost anything Shocked)
Here I go again, my wife was told her cholesterol was 6.5 and she started using logical margarine and her level went down to 3.2 over about 5 months, she then stopped using it, and now her cholesterol has gone back to 3.8 so it's time to buy some more.
A great tasting low cal very healthy drink if you have a juicer
8 carrots
2 apples
1 tsp of crushed fresh ginger
add a little water if you like
Since trying it I want to get a 20kg bag of carrots but always forget.
See ya John

Mine started at I think 6.3 but bad LDL was 4.5

I am using logical as well but ontop of that have cut out an enourmous amount of saturated fat and basically crap food as well the fibre business and upping my exercise. Talked my doc into giving me 3 months to make a dent before he puts me on drugs. Not yet 40 so want to avoid that as much as possible.
