Had a great session at Royal National park yesterday. Some sweet single track on footage:

Towards the end there is a funny creek crossing technique from the riders angle.

What's the deal with the dog in the national park?

Burt de Ernie's picture

This is the same creek crossing technique as mine only i have perfected it......I lol`ed.

Hop fiend's picture

to me it looked like a bloody Fox!

staffe's picture

and it belongs to one of the local riders, we are riding in the dog's "back yard".

Do you happen to have a GPS trace of the ride?

Dog's backyard or not, to be honest posting a a video here of MTB'ers riding inside the RNP with a domestic dog is a bit of a worry.

The RNP is one of the few parks where the rangers have worked to advance MTB trail access etc, and now here we have a video of riders taking a domestic dog in there - something which is highly prohibited.

Could be a big setback for MTB in the park if this gets out.

I had no idea, not being a dog owner myself I was (until now) completely unaware of dogs and RNP rules. Perhaps it was a fox afterall !?

where is the starting point for this track I have ridden on the main trail & never seen that track or creek crossing b4 ? I have also seen up near Heathcote end of the park people walking there dogs off the lead a few times on the fire trails .

I'm reasonably confident that I know all of the legal trails in the RNP and that is not one of them. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I would imagine that the dogs owner would be aware of the rules surrounding dogs in Nationl Parks so theres just no excuse.
As MTB access is only a trial in the RNP ammunition like this is just what opponents are looking for to help their cause. I would like to keep the privilege of riding there and would suggest thinking twice about your actions in the future.

Got to agree with you Paul J these are not legal MTB trails ,good video ..... bad form.

crank's picture

I did not recognise any of the track as part of the legal stuff either.

Another thing that would be good is to see some local riders at the Loftus track maintenance days. 3rd Saturday of every month. This month we had 8 people and everyone was from outside the Sutherland Shire. It's been about the same for the past year or more. Sometimes 1 or 2 locals show up.

May I suggest the youtube footage be withdrawn and this thread closed, and staffe has a quiet word with his mate to stick to the approved trails.

NPWS rangers will probably be already aware of the extent of local illegal riding and unleashed domestic dogs on the unapproved trails, as the tracks left by both activities are pretty obvious.

However, this site is monitored by all sorts of unfriendly groups and we simply don't need more noise about this than we already have.

According to the NPWS website, MTBing in the Royal National Park is still under trial. It would be ever so disappointing if the hundreds of riders, including parents and their kids, who currently enjoy riding the 'authorised' trails every week were no longer able to do this because someone decided to video their illegal trail riding experience and post it on the web for the world to see.
This is the Royal National Park, the oldest of all the parks(??) and if MTB got banned from here, it would create a precedence for other parks/reserves.

I rode RNP on Saturday and the authorised trails were still wet in places, so now that these unauthorised trails have been ridden there will be evidence of bikes on these walking tracks. So all the good work being done to 'get in' with the Bushcare and Conversation groups could be eroded. And we all know what they already think of Mtn bikers from the NPWS sessions held over the last year.

why hasn't the footage been taken off yet , I may only ride there once or twice a year but I like to go back there again soon with my family to ride .

You can't win as a mod, huh? Eye-wink

The way I see it is that pulling this thread is like sweeping the issue under the carpet. To be honest, I think this thread shows that given a chance to educate their peers, most riders will do so, and most people will respond well to being shown the light. It shows the majority of riders do want to do the right thing and will speak up against illegal activity.

All that adds up to showing the majority of riders are responsible.

Sure, someone could take that video and use it to show that "There's always one", but that can happen whether this thread is here or not.

To be honest, I think the example it sets and education of riders it brings more than offsets the negative image the OP shows.

I'm agreeing with Rob on this. The majority of the posts hear have been informative and encouraging responsible MTB in National Parks. The more we can show that this is a majority, the better. Peer pressure and education will do wonders.

But all should note - NPWS and Councils are avid readers of NobMob, Rotorburn, etc. Many of their staff ride bikes as well.
