fatal accident?

I was just about to send my write up this morning when I spilled a cup of water over my laptop Sad!!! Not sure if it has survived this accident but am hoping for the best!

It switched itself off after I spilled the water over it. I tipped the water out an tried to dry it with a towel and the blow dryer. Smiling (No comments necessary, thanks! Eye-wink)

Can anybody tell me how I could increase the survival chances of my computer?? Should I just plug it in tonight and see what happens or wait longer for it to dry propperly??

Cheers
Caro

Id leave it alone for a while and maybe even take it to the computer hospital to get dried out properly before you try and turn it back on caro. Hope Youre ok after the weekend? Does anyone want to do the 8 hour race on sunday with me as a team of two? Anyone interested get my number from my profile and give me a text as im still doing this from my phone! (sore subject!)

Turning it on with ANY moisture in there will probably fry something. Leave it in an open position near a cool fan, and rotate it every now and then (wiping away any moisture you can see), for at least a couple of days (longer if possible). Then cross your fingers.
I almost completely submerged a digital camera, and got it back to life using this method.

Remove batteries, don't connect to the power of course.

Go get a big bag of rice and bury said device in it. The rice acts as a dehumidifier and helps dry it out. Leave for at least a few days some place nice and warm.

If it's just water it's probably not a big deal. Give it some time to dry out (Rob's rice idea is a good one), maybe put it in front of a warm heater. Fresh water isn't terribly harmful to most electronics.

If it's anything except water (juice, beer, etc) you're in trouble and will need to disassemble it to get the gunk out. I lost a $400 keyboard that way.

Most laptops contain backup batteries besides the main battery, so removing it is no guarantee that it's powered down.

Thanks guys!
Do I have to worry about the rice getting stuck between the keys or are you saying close the lid of the laptop and then burry it?
Fingers crossed!

Caro,
If it turned itself off that may be a sign that something "popped" so it could be fatal. You can be lucky with electronics and water if you get the power and battery out quick enough but its rare. The advice you have is all good. I know your beloved laptop is a dear friend but this could be the time to think about an update.
Hope it works out...

But unfortunately the coffee will eat away at the components unless it's cleaned off.
