Chain Change

Well, I had to make a note of this somewhere and here is good a place as any.

Just changed the chain on the Rush. HG53 lasted (consults MotionBased) just over 400Km in just over 2 months... pretty pathetic.

Let's see how the replacement HG93 goes - it is a little cheeky Cannondale don't give you a quality chain right off the bat though, given the measly cost difference (I paid 20 bucks for the HG93 from T7 - picked up a couple at that price... niiiice).

Rohloff if you want better life than that

... that I didn't (and would never) buy a 53 - it came with the bike. Didn't expect much from it at all and wasn't surprised.

The test will now be how long the 93 lasts. Check back in a couple months.

...Rohloff (SLT 99) is not cheap, but we, Stuart, Dave and myself had our bike fitted with the German Made Rohloff chain, which I brought back from Germany, and still going strong and perfect!
Mine is 4 years on the bike, yes I would ride about 1/3 that you do, but at 3 times the cost of a conventional chain I still love the Rohloff chain.
I just got my wife to bring another one home for me, love that Euro to Aussie dollar at the moment!!! If you want one , too let me know, no prob to bring 2 back!!!

What did you do to it? Shocked

I just replaced a HG53 on a friend's bike. I reckon he would have done just over 6000km in about 8 months.

How are you guys figuring out when to change the chain?

Giant is the same Rob - specced my bike with x9 shifters, xt front derailleur, x0 rear derailleur, 990 sram casette.... and HG-53 chain.

I have a Park CC-3 Chain Checker. This shows wear > 0.75% and then again when it's > 1.0%.

At BA they have a fancier Wippermann Chain Wear Indicator which gives a visual idea of how bad the chain is by the angle the checker makes between itself and the chain.

It's amazing to see the measurement with the Wippermann tool week to week.

A worn chain will keep on going long after the 1% recommended stretch is passed. Trouble is then that the rings and cassette will be too far gone to mesh with a new chain and you'll have to replace the lot. I've made this mistake a few times before.

Have a look at Pikey's article: Know When to Replace Drive Train Bits!

is highly dependent on what conditions are being ridden in.

Wet conditions are bad for chains, especially new ones for some reason.
I've a mate who regularly get 5000km out of his XTR chains but utterly destroyed one in a single wet race.

An easy way to measure is just by using a tape measure and the 12" rule. Start at the center of any pin and measure 12 inches. The 12 inch mark should line up with the center of another pin. any more than 1/8th inch out... leave the old chain on and ride every thing into the ground then replace the whole drive chain.
