GET WELL SOON MATE!

Andy Bloot's picture

That's gotta be 6 weeks minimum- and the pain. Poor bugger. That sucks. He throws himself down some radical stuff. What happened.

Rob's picture

Yes, two dislocated elbows sounds very odd. Poor Gazza, all those bikes and no arms to steer them with. Can anyone say, "Unicycle?" Eye-wink

Erm... anyhow - this is like, tenth hand info, but seems he had surgery on just one of the arms in Canberra overnight and should be returning to Sydney tomorrow. I'd imagine the arm with the op. at least will be in a cast/support for quiet some time - maybe there's tendon/other damage that made it necessary and therefore needs a bit of protection for a while (Rob had distal tendon surgery and was in a support for 6 weeks, taking a full 6 months before proper exercise could be done).

Word on the street is there are some pictures about from after the crash with his arms pointing in unnatural directions [shudder]!

Buck's picture

Get well soon Gaz.

Just heard the bad news today on the ride.

Gary, when you can't use your hands you will find out who your true friends are.

I hope you get well soon buddy

Bernd's picture

Gazza, get well soon,

this nobmob group is bl**dy great and I bet u, all of us are happy to do something, just shout!!
But only one thing:
I wont w*** your A**!!!, sorry Mate.
Get well soon, we need you out there.
Bernd

Carlgroover's picture

Sorry to read about your accident, and I hope you're put back together quickly, it sounds like you'll be needing some good pain killers. I was needing plenty to get just 4 hours sleep a night with my current injury.
Get well Gaz.
John.

Alex's picture

the crash was after a rock face drop off about 1m then there was a downhill shoot to a 1/2m ish kicker jump to clear a rather large dippy gap style section about 2-3m ish i guess in length- funny angled and rather sketchy looking, he sure had guts to try it! but unfortunantley coming up short meant he couldt clear the lip to hit the transition on the other side and nose-dived OTB, face and arms taking the full impact- full face helmet was a great saviour here as the ambo's said he had no damage to his head/neck/back..

Nic's picture

Get well and get back soon ...

Nic

Matt's picture

Be sure to post up or give us a call if you need anything, or at least get Christine to! DVD's, books etc gladly donated, just don't ask us to scratch your itches ;-}

Flynny's picture

Glad I don't have to wipe his bum....

Get well soon mate

arpit's picture

Gazza, sorry to hear about that dude. If it is any consolation, you aren't the only one who's crashed there. I crashed at the Stromlo club round 2 weeks ago, in exactly the same manner - and it sounds like in the same spot. I landed on my head and arms too.

I didn't get dislocated elbows, fortunately. I finished the race, but at the bottom found I had gotten a bad concussion which will keep me off riding till the end of the month. I'm past the jibbering-like-a-moron stage (mostly) Eye-wink and just have the headaches now.

I hope you recover soon. I'll probably see you on another nobmob ride when I come back from the UK in December!

Squidly Didly's picture

Shucks to hear about this sort of stuff mate. Hey, at least that means you were pushing it. Yeow!

I've just moved back up to Allambie so give us a holla if you need some DVD's or even beerios brought round. Catchya soon fella

Stuart M's picture

Have been reluctant to post as I wasn't there but obviously those with first hand info are away from their computers so I will update as 2nd hand.

The boy is still stuck in Canberra, at the moment its looking like he'll be there until mid week atleast.

Left arm has a fracture, not enough to get cast so I suspect either hairline or green stick.

Right elbow was dislocated and couldn't be "popped" back in. Surgey Sunday night / early Monday morning. Pin now in place and cast for atleast 6 weeks. I would suspect this will mean he will be off work till then, if not longer.

Huge props to Bruce and Steve who hung around down there till the early hours on Monday morning before heading home, to Bernd for organising emergency accomodation for them (even though they couldn't find the key) and to all the others down there that helped. Its always reassuring to see mates looking after each other in a time of need.

It's at times like these that we also step back and take a look our own situations and on that note, without wanting to panic people, how is your income protection people?

Bernd's picture

"Its always reassuring to see mates looking after each other in a time of need."
And thats very Aussie....
Go Aussie, you guy's are gr8t!
Bernd

Paul's picture

Bruce and Steve I dip my lid to you, top shelf.

I love that MTB'rs always wait and make sure every rider gets home, even strangers.

christine's picture

Hello Everyone!
Ok George did have two dislocated elbows - one was fractured and after a long operation has a pin and cast - the other elbow is in a sling
As of Sunday night the hospital weren't expecting him to come out until mid-week...
If you want to call him he is in the Canberra Hospital in ward 6b and you ask for Gary Harwood and they will put you through - however! He is self administering his drugs so may be a bit...
will let you know more when there is more news...

MEEE Smiling

ps he isn't on his mobile - it's in the safe at the hospital

sykesey's picture

Bit of a downer that Gazza came off. I'd just finished my 4th run down the hill and was waiting when i heard the news, then got up there just after the ambulance so i missed it. That jump was sketchy, the jump above it though was really really nice and wasn't very hard (i hit it probably a bit too fast on my first time)

I have some photos from the day, as soon as i have a free moment i'll put some up. I have a good one of Gaz going off the jump just before the jump where he crashed, but i wasn't there for the crash so no photos of that (not that i'd want to take one of his arm going sideways from the elbow)

Stromlo is awesome though, will definitely have to hit it again (and i'm going to take 2 bikes next time so i can get a bit of the XC type stuff in as well)

leximack's picture

i have only been on a ride woith Gary a few times but was always amazed by his skills and talent on a bike.
This really shows how this sort of thing can happen to ANYONE.
Take it easy out there

Don

geoz's picture

And maybe it is now time to look at elbow braces ...

lorrie's picture

Won't be the same on the night rides without George!

Andrew

GAZZA's picture

could this be a first on nobmob? Just got my phone from the hospital safe and am flattered by all the wellwishers. Well, updated injuries are.. Fractured left forearm and dislocated right arm that wouldn't push in after two attempts so surgery was needed which was a good job as tendon/ lig damage was quite bad and it all had to be fixed up. Gonna have a big ass scar down the back of my arm and elbow the accident itself was the most unbearable pain ive ever been in. Sean, i think you might have been near me when i thought there was a rock under my elbow. Well it wasn't. It was my elbow poking out of the back of my upper arm! Not through the skin. Just stretching it! Wish i had the x rays to post. Anyway, i should be out of hospital tomorrow and back in sydney. Im just writing this the express the immense gratuitue i have for all who have showed concern and especially for the people who helped me on the day and afterwards. Especially bruce and steve for staying down so late. I cant thank you enough. Bloody legends. Sorry for any spelling mistakes( the drugs in here are fantastic! ) speak soon people. Gazza

evan's picture

Gazza its great to see you posting on the site.
I bet you'll be glad to get back to Sydney.
We are all thinking of you and hope for a speedy recovery.
Huge props go to Bruce and Steve for their efforts.

Take care and see you soon Gaz.

Evan

pikey's picture

In the imortal words of Captain Lance Murdoch
"Now let me start by saying... Good for you son!
It's always good to see young people taking an interest in danger.
Now a lot of people are going to be telling you you're crazy,
and maybe they're right. But the fact of the matter is:
Bones heal. Chicks dig scars. And the United States of America
has the best doctor-to-daredevil ratio in the world!"

and dont forget
sponge baths are covered by medicare

christine's picture

I know lots of you have been texting or calling George, but as of this morning he still wasn't out of hospital - he was hoping to be let out today though...i tell you, is he so amusing that they have decided to keep him? Or do they not want to lose sight of the most photographed nobmob bottom floating around the joint?
Will let you know when he is home!!!

MEEEE Smiling

Caro's picture

Either he is so amusing or the nurses are looking after him too well and he doesn't want to leave!? Smiling

Little-Ditty's picture

Mmmmmm, nurses.

Stuart M's picture

until he has done number 2's, they kind of like to make sure everything is working after heavy impacts before they let you go. One arm in a sling and the other in a cast set at 90 degrees at the elbow there are certain parts of his anatomy he can't reach and rumour has it he has stage freight because he needs a hand, literally.

See Gaz, you're not even safe laid up in hospital Eye-wink

Now any volunteers from this true band of mates prepared to go down and help out?

Rob's picture

Aren't there loads of vets lazing around at the moment. Can't do much 'cos of some horse flu or something? Word is that a vet can be pretty handy with rubber gloves and a hosepipe. Surely that'll sort him right out!

GAZZA's picture

as stuart mentioned by text before. The reason they cant move me back to sydney is because of the quarantine thing and me being hung like a horse they just cant take any risks you know!

pikey's picture

....obviously the drugs haven’t worn off Sticking out tongue

ar_junkie's picture

Quarantining Shetlands as well? Shocked

Paul's picture

I thought your ex gelded you or is that part of the property settlement?

Stuart M's picture

even comparing him to a shetland would be paying him a compliment.

Stuart M's picture

The boy is on his way home.

No movement on the number 2 front but the cleaners had seen how much he had been eating over the last six days and could foresee one g@d almighty mess so they pleaded with the docs to let him go before he blew, so to speak.

I sent down a pack of prunes today, how lucky is Christine! (hehe)

whippet's picture

Sorry to here the news about the amazing George coming up short. He is a real descent bloke who was quite happy to ride with retarded riders like myself. Both times we rode he managed to pop his back tyre and now it looks like he has moved on and done his elbows...Is that progress or what!!! I guess I am now in need of a new mentor? Are there any suggestions? What about that chick who rides the epic bike.....Is she worthy!!! I heard that she has a bit of a temper especially when being chased by dogs around the Dam! All the best for a speedy recovery George.

Leisa's picture

Hello Gazza- Mildred has been keeping us in the loop, but having now read about your injuries, I feel a little ill. Will certainly be taking it easy on my next ride (cause those pebbles I ride over, can do so much damage.... yeah.... right)!

Hope you feel better soon, Mildred is used to the shit that comes out of your mouth, I guess now she will also deal with it from the other end?!*@#!? Hee hee hee

PS. 'Whippet' I ride an epic, and I am worthy...... just maybe not as a mentor.......

christine's picture

you do not ride an epic!!
whippet - i so know who you are and am looking forward to sunday!!!
George spent last night at Kathys and goes there for the weekend - i shall trust all will return to normal with his body actions there!!!
he will welcome visitors next week no doubt when back at our place

Mildred

Stuart M's picture

and is sore all over. I don't think he'll be up for that kind of action yet

Little-Ditty's picture

That's a shame Christine. I thought you would have made a good nurse too. I have some nice mental images of this. Laughing out loud

Stuart M's picture

to go with that image Liam if we looked hard enough

whippet's picture

With so much talk about naughty nurse Mildred.... maybe their might be some downhill rides closer to home for George!!! I hope George wears his seatbelt this time.

P.S Mildred, I think your the one who rides the epic!....

christine's picture

besides, he is a grumpy patient - told me off this morning for cutting his toast up - honestly!!!
Stuart, you have the worst mind and Liam you arnn't much better!!Comments like both of yours will give people nightmares...
Nurse Mildred doesn't exist - that would mean she would have to be nice and we all know she isn't!!
On the upside, George is back drinking red wine so must be feeling better Smiling

Beany's picture

Gazza, I sympathise with you, I had a big stack going around Narrabeen Lakes (frigg'n Labradoodle) put a hole in my riding tights and gave myself a dead-leg. Scared the crap out of me I was shaking all over.

If Nurse Mildred (cute name) has some spare time, I need a little TLC.

Stuart M's picture

So Ditty was this the image you had in mind?

Beany's picture

Oh yeah baby, I'm having thoughts that my high school teacher wouldn't approve of.

Stuart can you put me in contact with that vixen, her healing hands and sassy smile are what I need.

christine's picture

you are shocking...anyway, i like to think i would wear a far sexier outfit than THAT if i was to be a nurse...
Stuart - i tell you, lucky i am currently a touch merry!!!! You are a wicked friend!!!!

MEEE Smiling

GAZZA's picture

for those concerned about my bowels. and as sick as it sounds there are some of you out there that have been paying a little too much attention. at approx 6.10am this morning there was movement. and by movement i mean 10 on the richter scale! and again at 6.30, then again at 7.00, then again at 7.30! i am confident that after such life altering movement my intestine is back to normal but i dont think my mind will ever be the same!!! to all that have shown concern about my other ailments, thank you deeply.i cant write back to all as im typing with one finger and havnt been able to hold the phone to my ear due my injury.i am on handsfree now and will answer when im not asleep! stuart. well done, and once again youve proved you have too much time on your hands!
all the best to all,
gazza

Rob's picture

Erm... to much detail!

I do hope though, that you've either got more arm mobility than you say or have invested in one of those fancy Japanese seats for your throne!
