Details:

2011 is the year of the Itch, the 7th running of The Briars Highland Fling, Australia's MTB Marathon Championship. The Fling is a mountain bike marathon for all. It offers a scenic and challenging route through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop.

Do the Full Fling (approx 110km), the Half Fling (approx 55km), the relay Flinging Threesome or take on the even bigger challenge of the 100Mile Fling

There is also the Casual Fling, a 14km Participation (untimed) Ride for those not feeling up to taking on the races above. An opportunity for those new to mountain biking or those less fit than they’d like to be, to get on a bike at the Fling.

The main racing is on Sunday 13th November but there’s plenty happening on Saturday 12th too including the Bundanoon Dash, (including The Battle of The Businesses) a fundraising 6km ‘sprint’ race (it’s not compulsory!) along with entertainment, food & drink, gear displays, demos, Kids MTB Skills Course.

Were you there and have a story to tell?

GAZZA's picture

I'm getting quite nervous as I don't know what to expect?
I've trained hard and done 80 to 100km every Sunday for the last Five weeks of mostly off road on the cyclocross bike.
I'm just not sure which bits are gonna slow me down? I know I can't go as fast on the downhills but I should be ok on the singletrack and road sections. I ride all the Dam on it and pass many Mtb riders but on a course I dont know so well it's going to be a different story.
Hoping for sub 5.5hrs but we'll have to see????

Fatboy's picture

I'm just going to go hard and beat Jason English this year!

He said he's decided to do the 100mile course this year so I think if I go for it I may get this overweight body through my 110km before he gets through his 160km!

Brian's picture

Sub 5.5 gazza, that would be an awesome time.

GAZZA's picture

My last training ride, I averaged nearly 20kmh and that had some pretty techy stuff and some big hills and rough firetrail, all I had to drink was water and probably ate half of what I'd consume in a race.
I'm only "hoping" to get that time!
You never know what will happen on the day. I never finished last year as I went out too hard and blew up at 75km. A finish on the crosser would be great but I'd be really happy with 5.5hrs.
I forgot to say, I've got either heatstroke or food poisoning at the moment! I feel pretty weak and have cramping in my guts! Don't know if it's something I ate or from working out in the heat yesterday?

Brian's picture

Hey Gazza, there must be something in the water. I had a great training ride Saturday but this week I can't eat. I'm feeling really full all the time and at this rate maybe a non starter. Hopefully the chemist has something to sort me out.
Cheers
Brian

Matt_B's picture

Worried about brokeback mountain?

GAZZA's picture

I had it. Basically a bug in your gut that feeds off yeast, wheat and sugar etc. That's half the reason I didn't finish the fling last year as I had this very full feeling and really couldn't stomach any gels or sport drink so i went hard and hardly ate.
I got it sorted at great expense and now use honey for energy and keep the maltadexdrin down to a minimum as it's a wheat based product and it ferments in my gut giving me that bloated, full feeling.
Beer is really bad for it which is why I'm off it at the moment and really upset!!!

evil4hire's picture

Why don't they start the elite off first instead of later? that way they don't scare the crap outa me when a group of 7 of them pass me like I'm standing still like last year.

This is my 3rd fling and last years was pretty tough and I only had about 10 training rides before I did the race(thats why i finished in 10 hours, and I still wasn't last hahahah). Probably the closest I've ever come to quitting something as i was wrecked by the end. i could not believe the amount of hills in the last 20k. What killed me was the huge uphill after the small water crossing. i think that was within 10k of the last tranistion.

At least this year I've been riding to work 3x a week which is about 27k each way on my mtb with fat tyres just to make it interesting.

I just hope to get close to 8 hours and a dream to get into 7's since im not a young guy anymore or fast racer but i do enjoy the quiet you get from being in the back of the pack.

Good luck all. look for me with the Metallica bike jersey on and say g'day on the trail eh?

Well, I don't drink alcohol at all but maybe that's my problem Eye-wink

daveh's picture

Between weekends away at weddings and Auckland for the RWC, my lead-up to the Fling has involved enough to take up the slack for both of you. Let's see how well that plays out on Sunday.....

Talldude's picture

This is my first fling and I hope to make it under 8 hours.

I did the Enduro at Wingello (25km) which at the time was the longest I had ever ridden, then the 3 ring circus which was the longest I had ever ridden, you get the theme right.........

Well 110km should be interesting right now I'm S***ting myself more so then when I got married.........strange

Brian's picture

Just make sure you eat and drink enough because once you start to feel the effects of not doing so its impossible to reverse.

Antsonline's picture

Just checkin if I've got candida. the beer tasted great, so I think I'm ok. I like that sort of test!
I'll probably check again after the race on Sunday. A couple of times.

Remember - rest well now Nobmobers, nothing you do now will make you faster on Sunday (other than clean your bike!)

tate's picture

fully resting (i.e. stopping completely) will make you slower on race day though. ive still got a training ride to get in to keep the legs alive. am thinking friday morning at this stage.

Brian's picture

My bikes been clean for a couple of weeks now, just swapped the tyres and she's now ready to roll.

GAZZA's picture

Just to check the crosser is ready.
Will spin the legs at high cadence on the trainer a few times also just to keep the blood flowing!

Brian's picture

So what size tyres do you run on the crosser?

GAZZA's picture

But I've put a 35 mm on the back and a 42mm on the front just for the fling. Running them tubeless.
A 42mm tyre isn't allowed in cross races but it'll give a little bit more comfort(not much!) for longer races.

Anyone camping in on Sat night?

Brian's picture

No camping for me.

daveh's picture

I will be camping on Sat. night, about to head off now!

LadyToast's picture

Just finished moving house, well the important bits anyway. So, time for a meal then sleep then a "very" early drive down on the day. Oh, and practically no training and 11 months of 5:30am starts due to the little man.

What could go wrong Eye-wink

See you at the finish....

Brian's picture

And you'll probably still do it in 5 1/2 hours.

philberesford's picture

Dylan, sounds like my prep last year. A bit late now so read my blog post after you finish. Good luck.

Logan's picture

However in particular Gazza on the Crossed.

LadyToast's picture

Well that was fun. Did anyone see the state of the top three elite on the finish line, in particular Blair? Poor guy looked like his body couldn't device to lock up or hurl first. Best finish I have seen on one of these events, not that I'm around to see many. I think Blair got it by 100th of a second - amazing.

Fatboy's picture

I spoke to Shaun Lewis at the finish. He told me places were Dylan Cooper, Ben Mather, Andy Blair then himself. Dylan had been dropped late in the second loop leaving the other 3 plus Dan McConnell to duke it out but according to Shaun they messed up their transition which allowed Dylan back on.

Jason English smashed the previous record for the 100 mile by more than a half hour. I didn't get his time but it would have been around 6:15.

Jenny Fay wine the womens full fling. She caught me on the last climb of the second loop and had another female with her. She kicked as she overtook me and smashed it up the hill and that was the end of her opponent.

I didn't hear how the half fling ended up but Antsonline competed so he'll be able to fill in the gaps. Hopefully he won!

Black Flash's picture

I managed to snap my saddle clean off its rails with 20km to go (in the half fling) . I eventually used it as a lid to my seatpost!!! Needless to say it was challenging... Might post a pic of whats left.. Managed a half decent time i thought too...
Big ups to Gazza for a 3rd in his category.

Logan's picture

My mate Rick Knowles took the win, but forgot to attach his transponder, he was even interviewed as the first CX rider over the line, Gazza came 3rd or 4th depending on which results you look at.

LadyToast's picture

Yeah Jason got 6:17 - amazing

All results here: http://www.onlineresults.com.au/Results/highland...

GAZZA's picture

I ended up with Beer and Money!
Not as Much Money as Jenny though! The cheques just kept coming!!! Will Ants get a treat out of her winnings?????
Well done to all.
My Body is wrecked, I'll be back next year but on a full suspension 29er. Bugger them Cyclocross bikes for Marathons! I'll be just using it for cross races in the future.

Antsonline's picture

You must be joking! I got to come home, wash the bikes, dry the bikes and then pack them in bags for a flight tomorrow morning. I needed that like a hole in the head I can tell you!!

Anyway - I dont often do this (ever) but I'd like to publicly congratulate Jenny. It was certainly not her most commanding / convincing victory, but it never needed to be. She raced to a plan today, and executed it perfectly. I was prouder today than any other race win of 30mins etc. It was a good ride - but better tactics.
Enough of the love in.

I didnt win, I was 4th overall in a very very rapid 1/2 Fling. I'll do a write up tomorrow for my blog. Great fun with Carlso, Trenton, Cameron, Kyle and Easty.

The full men - the first three - Dyl, Blairy, and Ben - incredible racing. Ben - he was an animal. Strongest man out there today by a mile. Blairy - gave it everything, wanted it so badly too. A really good ride. Dylan - just got into his little hurt box and somehow came back after getting dropped a few times. It just shows, it aint over till its over.

Nice to see and meet so many nobmobbers too. By all accounts, everyone had a good day (in some way or another), apart from the blokes whose kids made him late for the rego and wants to blame people, or demonstrate to Huw how unreasonable he is by not enforcing every rule written. Classy.
