Manly Dam update for 16 Oct

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Green/Open

The trail is Green! Sure there's some water on the fire trail but not too much. Yeah there may be a slight amber tinge but it's not amber... and Red yesterday?

We need to be careful that this site does not become irrelevant by being overly cautious!

Do you have more information?

If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.
Please do not post comments with such information - post a new update with the link above.

Agree that water on the management trail sections alone shouldn't mean amber, nor the usual permament puddle behind the houses at Southern Cross /Monserra since that seems to be driven by poor routed stormwater drainage off the houses.

So did you die of thirst? Eye-wink

I wouldn't generally update a status the same day as someone else... but hey... traditions, just like rules, are made to be broken.

so Manly Dam shouldnt have been called red yesteray?

bugger as i was hanging for a ride (havent been on the bike since the Scott 24hr) and saw someone say yesterday it was soaked and shouldnt be ridden so i stayed home this morning Sad

Per the Trail Status page: "This form is for entering current trail conditions.. " Note the use of "current".

Why bother with a status system if you guys are going to retrospectively grade them? Puzzled

Guys the Red was my call. I went out with the aim of a handfull of laps at 6.45am, but stopped at one. The trail at 6.45am was very very wet as per my post. But alas, the sun did shine brightly (yippee) and the trails did dry up quickly. Im all for multiple posts at differing times of the day, and if someone takes the plunge a few hours later and finds the trail had substantially dried out - great - post it up - dont waste the few occasions these days for a Lap of the Dam.
I still stand by my opinion of Red status for first thing Sat morn. But i also agree it may well have been green for Sunday.
Just keep in mind "This form is for entering current trail conditions.. "
Looking forward to the dryer times....

Sorry to be pedantic (and not meaning to have a go at you Black Flash) although I use this site to determine which rides I will go on as I'm sure many others do. With Manly Dam copping such a beating due to high use I avoid it if it's called Red, and only ride it Orange if I'm desperate for a quick ride (10 minute ride from my back gate).

On Saturday, due to the Red status, I ended up putting the bike on the roof, driving over to Belrose, and doing 4 Gates. Looks like another rider decided not to ride at all. I've also noticed Cascades and other trails being called Orange when they are about as Green as they ever get... yeah there's some water on the trail but we're talking puddles in the shade that are there in all but the middle of summer.

From the trail status form "Red indicates official closure, atrocious conditions, a complete no-go area. Amber indicates although the trail is not officially closed there are issues such as a partial closure, or other problems so riders should look for alternate venues. Green indicates everything is good."

Perhaps with Manly Dam we should use the Council official closure as Red with anything else being Orange? I think the alternative is that people will question the Trail Status and think "I'll just give it a go" even when it is really Red.

Just my two cents ..... and looking forward to summer when the status lights all shine green Eye-wink

See you out there!

Mate - no offence taken so dont worry about that. I completely agree with your comments. Maybe it was a little too stronger call, and maybe i was possibly influenced by the "sometimes" "delicate" nature of the trails around the Dam. Expecially with the amount of politics around at the moment.
I suppose we like to pride ourselves on being "responsible" and environmentally dilligent and can sometimes over react with "do i ride it or do i not...?"
As you say - a definitive Yes/No from the rangers would be great. But in my years, i have only been sent a "please dont ride" notice on a handful of occasions. Not even when it was blatently obvious... Hopefully this has been addressed with the current initiatives being looked into.
To apologise to those riders that observed the Red status and didnt get a ride in, i will ask the local mayor to bing plenty of beer to help celebrate the official opening of the Bantry Bay loop.....

The good news is outside your windows.... All the way to the weekend!! Could even be up for a night ride mid week...

I think we all tend to treat Manly Dam with a little to much caution at times. Unfortunately at this time of the year its a reality that we will be riding wet as it simply never dries out. Its also unfortunate that so much of it is rock based which takes even longer to dry out. Luckily though there is a lot of the trail that is pretty good for wet weather riding.

I have no hard feelings, i would have loved a ride but there is always next weekend Laughing out loud

I might be up for a night ride if someone is going to organise one..... Thursday is out but will do what i can to make another night
