Hey Whiskers,

Depends on where you bought it from, if from CRC or wiggle you wont get base maps but dont dispare you can get them for free of the net and with a small amount of reading on loading them up you will be sorted, try this link.

http://www.osmaustralia.org/garmin.php

Enjoy

This site is a bit easier to download and install from.

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

If you want the map for mountain bike riding then go to

http://openmtbmap.org/

You can add tracks yourself. All the main MTB tracks are on it, also the Mundabiddi Trail and Bibbulmun Track.

You probably don't need to. Find out how much space you have and then download the OSM map.

You have to download Garmin Mapsource first, then download and install the OSM map onto your computer, the use Mapsource to transfer the map onto your GPS.

Got mine as a bundle when they first came out so the price of the maps (Aust. & NZ) was not much more than just buying the unit. I did, however, buy maps for Southern Africa and, yes, they are expensive. Tried to load on some free ones but they were all pretty crappy for that part of the world so just bit the bullet. The unit itself is awesome once you get to using it. I have all my bikes programmed into it, a speed/cadence sensor on each and it comes pretty much everywhere these days, on and off road.
