Alternative rear shock for '07 Trance

Was hoping for some advice from any tecnhical bike boffins out there.

The Fox Float R rear shock on my '07 Trance is beginning to display significant wear after years of considerable abuse. It has been a great piece of equipment, but it is time to do 1 of 3 things: replace, recondition or find an alternative.

I have tried to find exact replacements, but am having no luck online - not sure if the Float R is even made anymore (all seems to be RP2 or RP23).

I have sourced a place over east that can recondition the shock for about $250, but it still leaves me with the same shock.

Are there suitable alternatives to the Float R out there. The kicker is that this is the Trance with the old glory hole in the frame where the shock resides, so there needs to be adequate room for the shock to move about (I think the knobs and levers on RP2 and RP23 may stop these shocks from fitting).

Advice??

The Trance uses a custom length shock so you won't be able to buy one very easily. I think your best bet is to get it reconditioned. I would speak to your LBS who can talk through options and also deal with the reconditioning on your behalf. It's my understanding that this will give you a shock that is almost as good as new.

The other consideration is whether the rest of your bike is holding up. If you've not been on top of the maintenance and replacing parts as necessary (such as the suspension bearings) then you may want to think about whether you are reaching the end of the bike's life. I've got an 08 Trance and would almost certainly be replacing the bike now if I hadn't been on top of the general wear and tear. I think the rear shock is the only thing that has lasted with minimal maintenance to date.

I'm after a rear triangle so let me know if you decide to get rid of the frame.

It will be anything but "the same shock" when you get it back. They do shock customisation.

You give them your bike details, riding weight, some other stats on a form they send you, and a description of what you want to be different and they rework the shock accordingly.

I believe the money is similar to what you are proposing to pay now.

from memory they were a 7.25 x 1.75 which is now a standard length, you can buy a float r for around $350 from a sydney online store, they may just have to order your sizing as they only have it in rp23 and rl, if it was an anthem shock i have one sitting here

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I don't want to scrap the old girl just yet, still a great alrounder for me, and there is still nothing out there of a similar nature that makes me want to part with more of my hard-earned's.

I think I will investigate the PUSH option. Looks like you have to go via the LBS. Which LBS in Perth can organise that?

You could just buy a newish second hand trance frame and shock (maybe $500) and transfer your bits across and then sell the old one on to recover some cost. You still have a second hand shock so you'd need to shop carefully but you get a 'new' trance out of it
