DH forks, marzocchi 66 vs Fox 40's

Hi,

I'm riding a giant glory0 (the free-ride model). It currently has a pair of Marzocchi 66SL 1 ATA Air, 140-180mm. And i'm thinking of putting on some Fox 40's... Cause I reckon I would be better of with some fat double crown forks to lift the front end a bit higher...

Does anyone have any advice on this idea? Do you think its worthwhile? Are dual crown forks that much better than single??

Cheers,
Nik

which glory 0 is it? the one with the 1.5 steerer tube? if it is, personally, i would stick with the single crowns, and put as much $ as you can into a wicked set of the new rock shox totem 1.5's or manitou travis 1.5 or something along those lines, as you can get loads of good travel to weight to stiffness ratio with lots more freedom of movement than a double crown..and considering the glory's are pretty damn heavy, the extra crownage would boost it up considerably weight wise! however, if this doesnt bother you, and you want pure indestructable heavy ass bomb proof monster travel fork, then maybe you do want a double crown...also if it is a 1/18 steerer tube (normal) than i would definantly say get a double personally. I cant speak for a fox 40, dont know anything about it, i do know the 1.5 single crowns are the way many manufacturers are going at the moment, and they rock Smiling

Are Dual corwn forks better then single?

It totally depends on what sort of riding are you doing and which forks you are compairing.

Double crown forks will track a bit better due to the extra resistance to twisting but they will also limit your turning circle so are not so good for slow speed freeridey stuff.

lifting the front end up will change your geo as well, not knowing the info on the glory you'll probably find it more stable at speed when pointing down but less manageable on the flat and in tight twisty stuff.

The other thing you need to consider is the extra force you are putting on the head tube area with the longer forks. If you are into dirt jumping you are better sticking with something shorter.

As for the Foxes... They are a lot of extra coin over other top brands and I'm not sure most riders would be able to tell, or get, the full benefits.

Yeah, its the 2007 glory0 with the 1.5" steerer, which i guess raises more Q's, which forks have 1.5?

And the other thing is that I'm 6'4' and weigh almost 100kgs, and it kinda feels like the single crown 66's are just a bit to small and low... so raising the front end and changing the

The head tube can handle dual crown forks its pretty strong, and i dont dirt jump, just dh and freeriding.

Good point about the cost of the fox's, I dont race so i prob dont need the most expensive gear... but i do love the look of them...

cheers for the advice...

Nothing in a double crown will have 1.5 steerer but you can get a reducer for the frame. So you'll need to factor in the cost of the reducer ($50=$100) and a new headset.

dang,, this keeps getting more and more expensive...

before hitting up doubles and reducers, maybe at least check out some 1.5 forks, as they are pretty damn good, and the whole point of 1.5 forks, is to gain the kind of travel that a double crown offers, but without the lack of stiffness you get from a 1/18 single crown, therefor you can have a 8"+ travel fork (gaining the geometry you after) yet have a super stiff feel, and uber toughness good weight and reasonable price...especially seeing as you have a 1.5 headset! price vs geometry vs weight vs stifness vs travel = some damn fine forks..check out the rockshox/manitou and marzocchi websites to see whats on offer? my 2 cents anyway! also, maybe try to test ride some forks you like if poss, some times they dont feel anything like what you'd hoped..especially when forking out $500-1500!

IMO 1.5 is a bit of a lemon. 100 years of moto technology says if you want a long stiff fork you need to go Dual crown.

Going to a 1.5" steers doesn't offer much more stiffness over a trad 1 1/8".

But as Alex says they are some good freeride SC forks out there. Ameil raced most of last years National DH series on a set of Totems. There aren't too many tracks in Aus that benefit from more than 7" travel anyway.

Maybe get a new stem or a couple of headset spacers, might be a cheaper way to raise the front end Smiling

Fox 40's are nice if you can afford them, they will add quite a bit of weight to the front end though, one of the nice things about FR bikes like the glory is the high weight to brute strength ratio. I don't think you'll notice much difference in stiffness to 1.5" 66's

you guys are a wealth of info,, given me a lot of good ideas to consider.......
