Hi all hoping to enter the Rock Wallaby Enduro at Appin at the end of May. From the description it sounds a litte technical ? , would it be similar to Ourimbah , keen to do the 50km but would depend on the course. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge ?

[Mod. Moved to Sydney (South) as that is where Appin is]

It is technical in parts. For the most part, 85% of it is nice flowing single track BUT all along there are little rocks, roots etc that can catch you out at speed if you're not paying attention. For most people with a few year riding though it is no problem at all.

The other 15%, well they again are all rideable and often there are B Lines anyway so I would say go for it. If you can ride it you'll love it and if you can't there are options at worst and you'll improve at best.

In comparison to Ourimbah, I've only ridden there once but I'd say Appin is flatter, more stone surfaces, a bit more technical and contains more variety.

It's a great track and well worth riding. Still my favorite in Sydney.

I only wish people would stop going on about it so it doesn't get ruined like the Dam did. That said, more use may save Appin in the long run from dirt bikes.

Thanks for the info, it sounds pretty good and a nice way to spend a Sunday morning

If the course is the same as last year I would say it is fairly technical and sustained. Definitely one of the most technical courses on the MTB enduro race calendar.

Last year's course only contained part of the standard XC loop and those bits were actually some of the least technical sections of the 25km Rock Wallaby race loop. Some of the sections of fire trail/ 4WD track linking the single track together were also quite technical in parts - not just standard smooth fire trail like dirt works or highland fling.

That's not to say it's not doable by most riders as there are B-lines and you can always take it easy and scope the lines out on the first lap and hit it harder on the 2nd. It might just take you a bit longer than your average 50km MTB race so be prepared with extra food/water.

If you can do Ourimbah without dabbing you shouldn't have too much trouble with the technical parts.

I think the race title, Rock Wallaby Enduro, provides an indication whether it is going to be a technical run or not Smiling
