The missus is saying that she needs a long sleeve top that takes the bite out of the cold air for early morning rides. She already has arm warmers, booties, leg warmers and rain jacket but she wants a warmer long sleeve riding top.

Please note this is Perth, not Tasmania.

Anyone had any experience or recommendations with this sort of top? Ground Effect have an interesting top that she is eyeing off.

should I also tell her that wind chill is a myth?

What harm can it do? Eye-wink

Ground effect do nice gear.

I would be concerned she might get TOO hot as the ride progresses as their gear is more suitable for NZ climates. Has she considered getting a vest? Would be lighter and take up less room in a pack/pocket?

I think the Popsicle is a great choice - I use the "Baked Alaska" which looks like the male equivalent, and I love it. Phil's right in saying it warms up during the ride, but unzipping the front slightly allows some air in and I find I can control my temperature really well.

I have a Frosty Boy (I think) and it's a great top. The whole front is protected with windstopper fabric which works really well.

Only problem is that its probably a little too good for winter here (Newcastle) so it only comes out on the worst/windiest of winter which lasts maybe a month.

In hindsight I would probably be better off with the Baked Alaska but at least I'm covered if I end up somewhere freakin cold.

On the basis of that I'd also think the Posicle is a good choice.

Thanks for that, yes she already has a Gillet (vest), ear warmers etc. etc.

She has all that gear and is still suffering from the cold? Does it really get that cold over in Perth?

htfu? steep hill, drive to it, ride it, go back down, select one higher gear, ride up again - heh presto, warm. downside of road riding is the windchill factor.

Having said that, i dont do mornings - too frickin cold.

Here's a review I did of this year's Baked Alaska:

Jeez Hawkeye, nice looking Kashima coated forks buts what with that cable routing? Looks like the cable will hit the tree before your front wheel Smiling

Not my bike. Sticking out tongue

Will be the subject of an upcoming review on bicycles.net.au. First impressions are that while it is not what you'd call an aesthetically "pretty" bike like a Spesh or a Santa Cruz, it rides really well.

Lab gear makes some really good stuff if you want to stick to australian made. Well worth a look.

On real cold days I use a long sleeve Ice Breaker thermal, merino fabric, 200grams. Keeps you warm but also doesn't over heat you. They can also be worn as a t shirt.

I just picked up some icebreaker stuff from mainpeak yesterday. SALE on icebreaker, 25% off and spend more than 150 and free beanie that folds up to fit in ur pocket. choices are std underlayer like murray said below or they have 2 cycling orientated ones that have breathers at back and a little pocket, one has std neck, the other zip for the racers. long sleeves are 200 weight, short sleeve 150 so i got one of each to mix up layering for different conditions. was pretty cold last friday morning, 1.7 degrees riding to work, not exactly tshirt weather. night riding of late has been frezing also.
