Garmin Edge 500 Firmware Update 3.0

By Brian - Posted on 14 June 2012

I just come across the latest firmware update for the Edge 500. I have only just installed it and haven't tested as yet but they have added a couple more screens now which I think is pretty cool.

Updated mine last weekend just need a dry trail to check it out on:(

Just a note, if you don't want the install to take a billion years delete all or some of your least important ride history first as it has to scan each and every data entry during the process.

I had to delete courses from the edge, it wouldn't upload new rides after updating.

Brian's picture

I always delete my history so uploading profiles is quicker.

Thank you, done!

not impressed.. made my commute route much harder as the same routes suddenly gained about 50m more climb Sad

Brian's picture

Dave that's good to hear. The Edge 500 normally shows 10 percent less climbing than the Edge 800. Hopefully they'll be a bit closer now.

hawkeye's picture

is there one of those for the 705? I need to work on my climbing Eye-wink

My Garmin showed more climbing on my regular road ride too by approx 25 meters though it always shows a
different range every time I ride this road route... Nothing changes I always take the same lines but get varying degrees of climbing.

Will be interesting to see how it tracks Awaba this weekend (assuming the race is on).

There are a few stories of the new update "bricking" the 500 or causing it issues to upload rides etc.

Might be worth waiting a little bit and see if there is a further update.

Brian's picture

Yeah but the gain of more elevation is worth the risk Sticking out tongue

PS. I went to version 2.8 to get rid of some issue in which it did but it also created a few others. Gotta love firmware updates

Has anyone tried the V3.3 firmware update for the 705 lately? I recall a post mentioning that the update caused all the user settings to be deleted? My unit very occasionally locks up and lately won't power up past the first screen when you load a memory card (both used & brand new) After speaking with Garmin Support (a contradiction in terms it would appear)they told me to update the firmware to resolve these issues and as long as I "safely removed the device" after downloading the update I wouldn't lose any of my user settings. So I get online & start the process and a couple of steps in I read a warning "update will clear user settings". Nice work Garmin.
Any ideas/suggestions?

Cheers,
Chris.

For the Edge 705 - If it is refusing to start with the micro sd card installed it usually means the card filesystem is corrupted. Put the card in a SD reader and connect it to your computer to run chkdsk against it. Select yes to fix errors. Once done you should be able to put it back in your Edge. If it fails to recognise the card properly (doesn't recognise maps installed to the card) then I fixed this by taking the card out, connecting the edge to my computer and then installing the card whilst the edge was connected to the computer. (SD cards can be installed whilst powered on).

Separately there is an exchange program available - my Edge 705 buttons are falling apart and for $139 you can send it to Garmin who will swap you for a refurbished one.

Did this update yesterday. After the new software loaded the machine locked up and wouldn't turn on.
Did a hard reset (press POWER/MENU/RESET at the same time) and it came back in good shape with firmware 3.0. Had no trouble uploading files afterward.
Nice having the 2 extra screens Smiling

Here's the forum topic if you are having upload issues. Mine had some corrupt course files which I deleted through the garmin unit menu and then it allowed uploading of ride profiles

Have done the firm ware upgrade, now unable to upload, just hangs.
I deleted all history on the devise before the update.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks

Brian's picture

Have a look to see if you have any courses loaded. If you do delete them using the garmin itself and try again. Mine was just hanging I deleted them and all was good.

Juliea's picture

Thank you! Have been stuffing around with this most of the day.
Gotta love firmware updates!
You have saved me from more frustrating moments.....

Brian's picture

I've gained 160m elevation on the same ride home last night. Gotta love that.

This means it should be the same as the edge 800 as that normally is about 10% more.

Took all the activities off the unit and it updated within a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the heads up.

To upload courses one used to be able to use the Edge 500 as a USB drive, browse to the 'Courses' directory and dump a .CRS file in there. The unit would recognise this and convert it to the internal format.

Well, with this new firmware you cannot do this. The only way I seem to find is to use the Garmin Communicator Plugin, which only works on certain O/S'. This is a ridiculous change Sad

So if you only run Linux and have a CRS file how do you now get it onto an Edge 500? Anyone know?

Rob's picture

Ah, ha... after some annoying work getting past the first line support 'gatekeeper' finally got a reply from someone at Garmin who knows what they are talking about:

When you put a course on the internal memory you will want to put it in the NewFiles folder, not directly into the Courses folder.

Sure enough, dump your .CRS file in NewFiles and voila! Smiling

I've just gone back to firmware version 2.80 and 3.0 just had too many glitches for me Sad

Logan's picture

Mine has been fine, not had any issues what so ever with the new version since I upgraded it.

Hey... so which instructions/firmware download/etc. did you follow to go back.

FWIW, the 3.0 is working OK for me, but the stupid 'stepped' altitude issue...

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?28065-P...

... is too annoying. Specifically - it screws up Strava's power calculation it seems Sad

Brian's picture

Here you go. When you download the version 2.8 (or what ever one you go to) the file downloads as the incorrect name so don't forget to rename it as I missed that point and couldn't work out why it wouldn't ask my to update.

PS. I still get GPS drift even though going back to 2.8 which is quite annoying but I now just use the Edge 500 for mtb racing.

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?18937-L...

Logan's picture

I dont have any issues with my Edge 500 at all, on the MTB it occasionally drops the signal for the most part it is pretty good.

garyinoz's picture

Mine is intermittently showing me about half my actual speed and losing a few K's in the process. I think I'll roll back and see if it's any better, it was fine initially after the upgrade.

Rob's picture

Yeah - what started this whole thing for me was stupid distance readings from the wheel sensor. Turning the sensor off and using pure GPS fixed things.

Eventually I moved the sensor a little closer to the magnet (it's very, very close - almost touching now) and things are better. Which begs the question - why did this start happening anyway when I didn't touch that?

Brian's picture

Make sure the sensor batteries are good

garyinoz's picture

My next step is to remove the sensor (or at least the battery) and see how it goes. Back on v2.8 now will find out tomorrow.

Oldernslower's picture

What others wrote - only major problem had with mine is when batteries got low. But distance/speed may become an issue when the sensor has been hit by a rock/branch and twisted it so it moved away from magnet on wheel.

Only other problem is that the cadence sensor often shows I'm doing over 220 rpm!!!

Also when upload to Garmin Connect the data in the head unit is different to that uploaded. Example heart rate max and top speed will differ. Also what i see on the head units display as the max HR and what the units memory says my max is will differ, eg will see 162 on the display but info says only 158 (162 is my tested max HR), top speed will differ and distance may differ? I find that a bit strange.

ido09s's picture

I cant even get mine to update for seom reason lol

I have put the uploaded file on the Garmin and it just doesnt seem to want to upgrade the firmware.....

Brian's picture

What version are you going from and to?

ido09s's picture

I am not sure Brian, i would have to have a look
