Stem....help please

Hi Folks,

My saddle and bars are at roughly the same level even though my stem is flipped and I have removed the spacers. I am keen to drop the handlebars to get more weight over the front wheel and guess the most logical way is to get a stem with more of an angle (mine is very little....on the Giant XTC 29er).

If anyone has a spare stem lying around that I could try for a couple of weeks, I would be very appreciative. I could then either buy it from you if it works well or return to you if you don't want to sell it (or if the angle is wrong).

Thanks
Ian

Giant use their own OD stem for 29ers now which limits options in terms of replacements. I think it's a 1" steerer tube but someone may now for sure here.

I don't know when they started using this, but worth double checking just in case....

....if that helps

They certainly do. I just tried to fit a new Crank brothers cobalt stem this morning to my Giant. No good, too small. That was 1"1/8, so maybe the giant is 1" 1/4?

I have a stem for sale if anyone is interested. Cobalt 3 grey/blue....

and limited research, the only option at the moment is Syntace for after market Giant Stems. The MTBR Giant forum was where I found out the info I needed. I think the F119 from Syntace is your only option right now.

G'day - 2012 is OD2, ie 1 1/4" steerer.

There are no stems available i can think of with more than an 8 degree rise. Giant sell plenty of different lengths but not rises. Syntace and Giant are the only 2 I have heard of for 1 1/4 stems.

Consider carefully whether your seat is actually high enough, because that problem strongly implies the frame is too big for you (or its a small, in which case, the 29er is fundamentally problematical because of the headtube). If it is what it is, the solution used by the women riding 29ers is negative riser bars - so you would need to start looking into handlebars. maybe a riser bar upside down with no upsweep or backsweep would work??

edit -new product coming out that may be the solution

syntace will probably release as a 1 1/4 OR 1 1/8 model (they provide a shim)

The bike is the Carbon XTC 29er but one of the guys at a local Giant dealer shop told me over the phone that it is a normal steerer size on the bike as the Carbon XTC was released mid-way through the season between 2011 and 2012, and only the "pure" 2012 models are different.

If anyone has a spare stem lying around that I could try for a couple of weeks, I would be very appreciative. I could then either buy it from you if it works well or return to you if you don't want to sell it (or if the angle is wrong).

Chitts, I have a FSA 115 100mm 6 degree that you can try but given it is only 6 degree it may not be that different. Alloy with carbon face plate. If you like it we'll sought something out. PM me if you want to try

..... but the one on it is 90mm and 8 degrees. I am hoping to try something like a 100m 15 degree.

Some growth will help...

What about drop bars? Smiling I can see you using them!
