Tyre advice

Need to buy new tyres for my 26" dually. Currently using the "Maxxis Ignitor" & have got very good wear out of these tyres. Not sure whether to stay with these or try something new & a little faster. Looking at the "Maxxis Crossmarks" or the "Continental X King" in UST as an option.
Most of my riding is Dubbo Gully/Convict Trail area, Ourimbah & Awaba XC tracks. Do a few 100km races during the year & also the 24hr at Mt Annan in Dec.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks

Ignitor is good on the front, especially in 2.35 size (more like a 2.2). You could consider a Larsen TT 2.0 or Crossmark 2.1 for the rear. Larsen provides better climbing traction and much better braking grip thatn the Crossmark, which is probably a bit better when cranked over in the corners but climbing and braking grip is ordinary at best.

Thanks for your reply, considering the Larson tt for the rear. You recommend the 2.35 Ignitor on the front, will this look odd having a narrower tyre on the rear?

I'm a heavy(ish) person, about 90kg, and I've found 2.35" tyres to be faster than 2.1" tyres. Unless you're a lightweight person you might want to consider wider tyres.

The Ignitor is small for the nominal 2.35 size, while the Larsen is big for a 2.0. So they go well together.

Most folks who are experienced prefer the bigger tyre on the front anyway for more steering grip... the front is your control tyre. The exception might be for all-mountain riding where a generous and even double-ply rear helps minimise pinch flats.

For XC duty I usually run a 2.25 on the front with a 2.1 out back. You get used to tje look to the point where front and rear the same looks odd, and a smaller front just looks plain wrong Eye-wink

Hi,
I've personally used the X-King's myself in the 2.2 Racesport Casing.
These are some of the best I've tried out there, the grip is impressive (like a crossmark) but they much better and they're also (reasonably) lightweight. I have heard good things about the UST versions as well.
For Mount Annan the ignitors will be overkill as the trail is essentially hardpack - I personally would run the X-King on the front with something faster on the rear but 2 X-Kings should still do the trick and they would be really good for awaba and ourimbah were a having a decent amount of bite is nice.
I hope this helps!

Hi,

Having used Swchalbe Nobby Nic/Racing Ralph ghetto tubeless, which were great/fast for xc but the sidewalls really broke down quick.

Anyone done ghetto tubeless on ignitors or even the xkings (thanks mikey) to keep the weight down with grip ??

Going to try this weekend on the Trance!
Using X-king 2.4" to run rear and Ignitor up front! Cool

Ignitor folding bead is fine as a front run ghetto tubeless. Forget about the 2.1 - it's tiny, much smaller than other 2.1s, more like 1.9. Get the 2.35 - will be about the right size to run with a 2.1-2.2 rear unless you're runnign a Larsen which you should use the 2.0. The Larsen is the opposite of the Ignitor - it's quite a big bag.

A few years ago in the xc world it was common to run wider tyres on the front than back. These days I think its more common to run the same size. There is clear scientific evidence that wider tyres roll better than narrow ones and with 70% of your weight over the back wheel you will get more benefit from running a wider tyre. So if there is a 2.25 available don't be afraid to run it.

Just my 2c
