Food Allergies

Most people would probably see this as sensitive personal information, but then again, I'm a little odd so will share. Perhaps other people would find this useful...

As a few of you know, I've not had the best run of luck in the last few marathon events, and have mainly put this down to sickness, nausea, etc. Despite trying to eat well in the lead up and during rides the stomach would just not be able to take in enough fuel and when that happens a DNF is pretty much always on the cards.

So, I had some a food allergy tests and here's the results, which explain a lot. Rating is 1 to 4 (highest):

Cow's Milk - 4
Beef - 3
Brewer's Yeast - 3 (OMG!)
Meta-Bi-Sulphite - 3
Baker's Yeast - 2
Cucumber - 2

With the exception of the last item, this is all rather bad.

Milk is in just about every commercial cake + biscuit out there. It's also in Powerbars. I had suspected being lactose intolerant since the Coffs trip and that little 'episode' after stopping for a caramel milkshake. I also had a rather creamy pasta dish night before that event and felt like dirt in the morning.

Beef explains a lot - the meat of choice in pre-race pasta. Doh!

Brewer's Yeast - disaster!

This Meta-Bi-Sulphite stuff is a preservative (E220-228) and found in loads of foods. It's used in lots of dried fruit which was about to become food of choice on the bike.

Baker's Yeast - if the milk in most commercial buns, biscuits, etc. doesn't get you, this will.

Cucumber - Pah, like this matters! Eye-wink

So, a small modification of diet is required. On the plus side, it's better to know what's wrong and avoid the above then carry on feeling ill constantly so it's good news really! Smiling

It will be interesting to see how things pan out.

morning tea. I'm surprised by the beef though, I didn't think you poms have had access to real beef for a mad long time.

OK jokes aside swap out the beef pasta for seafood pasta, maybe samon or something, good for you and tastes great.

Dried fruit, get yourself a food preserver, basically sucks all the moisture out of the food and therefore prevents it from going bad, or something like that. Word of warning on this one though, not really good to eat on long rides as your body needs the water more that the dried fruit will but guess where it will go, sucked up by the fruit first, if you see where I'm going.

Time to start tinkering with the diet.

Brewers yeast, well I suppose its better than brewers droop, maybe it's time to start drinking the wine with Gaz or find a boutique brewer that makes a yeast free beer, there is bound to be one out there somewhere.

Rob,

Is it an allergy or as my wife (a naturopath) calls it an intolerance.

I was tested and was found to be intolerant to a number of substances mainly wheat and yeast and my wife put me on a program to remove them from my diet and then re-introduce them slowly so the body adapts to them.

I can now drink beer with the best of them, but I steer well away from white bread (highly processed crap) and stick to more natural alteratives (wholemeal, rye, etc).

Yeah, here's hoping that brewers yeast at least can be re-introduced. Seeing the specialist who sent me for these tests tomorrow and will see what their plan is.

FWIW, I've never (not even as a kid) eaten that white stodge most people call bread - yerch!

As for the wine Stuart, no can do - most of it has the 220 preservative in and alcohol so must contain yeast also. Doh!

Rob at least you can still have a bong Eye-wink

Stuart you know way too much about the process removing the moisture out of dried fruits given the clothes you have been seen in laterly.
And further more, beer with out yeast is called cordial Sticking out tongue

try this link, but you've then got to be a member to see the answer, it is free http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read.php?thread=64...

Sapporo is also "low" yeast, apparently they use some sort of ceramic filter that removes most of the yeast.

I will get you more, have faith

Spirits that have been distilled e.g. vodka, tequilla, etc have no wheat or yeast and are perfect for people with wheat and yeast intolerances.

You may have to stay away from G&T and Pimms and Lemonade because sometimes they can be distilled from wheat grains
