The 1000$ bike thread

hi,
have been taking a mate for rides recently (on a borrowed Superlight 29er) and he loves it and wants to really get into riding. I promised to help him find a bike.
The only issue is that he's on a strict budget of a 1000$. He loves the superlight but you'd be struggling to find that with a decent kit under 3k.
I saw that giant are selling anthem 29ers with 2x10 x7/x9 for around 1900$ NEW which I thought was an awesome deal (although I'm not exactly a giant fan) but the budget is still a 1000.

His point was that if those bikes sell for 2k new there should be some used ones around for a 1000.
I guess there will be, but probably not for another year or two.

In the meantime, I thought I'd start a little what would you buy for a 1000$ thread? - 29er hardtail, 26er fully, or loooooow spec 29er fully?

Cheers

A rubber mallet to bop your mate with?

Resale value on used 29ers, duallies especially, is still silly high - those $1900-odd Giants I've seen go for $1500 used. It's a very hot segment.

Go for a 26" dually then if he really enjoys the sport he will have to spend some more cash.

Single Speed....Mountain Biking at its simplest (cheapest)Smiling Start with a frame from the classified ads http://nobmob.com/node/39341 and build it up yourself from new and second hand parts. A unique bike for under $1000 is a possibility. This frame takes a belt, but no reason why a chain could not be used.

the Aussie dollar was as strong as the American! ... Wait...
Nevermind, but I still don't get why bikes are so much cheaper over there:
