XX cranks - play

hi,
my bike's developed an annoying creak recently and upon further inspection i noticed a little bit of play in the cranks.
i've taken them off, cleaned and following SRAM instructions, greased them before reinstalling. can't get rid of the play though. (no matter how hard i crank the bolt up)
also, while everything seems to be in the right place i've noticed that there is an almost 5mm gap on the driveside between the crankarm and the BB.
is that the way it's supposed to be?
i'll try to attach some pics.
cheers

Have you tried adding a spacer or two between the frame and BB?

Re the play in your crank, I recently had a similar problem with my SRAM crank, not XX, however, my LBS sorted it by placing a thin plastic spacer on the crank arm on the non drive side.

will try it with a spacer and report back.
and the gap on the driveside looks allright to you?
I guess it must have been there all along. 5mm further in and the big ring would be pretty much hitting the chainstay. just wondering what seals the BB on that side?

Driveside gap is the same as mine. When i fitted my BB to the frame the pamphlet indicated that different spacers were needed for different width BBs, but the spacers for my BB were not in the kit. So make sure you have the correct ones fitted.

You've probably done this but check the spacers, seals, etc are in the correct order and the correct way round and it is torqued up to specified setting.

some gap on the DS is normal, space it out if it will make your feel better.. the NDS controls this gap and the chainline.
Just be sure that any spacer you add does not close this gap enough to side load the bearings.

Does your crank spindle use a plastic bush that fits snuggly on the drive side end of the spindle, which steps the spindles outside diameter up to match the inside diameter of the drive side bottom bracket bearing? My SRAM cranks used this arrangement and I had constant problems with play in my cranks. After 2 new replacement plastic spacers supplied under warranty, I got on the lathe and turned up an aluminium bush and the play has never been seen again. If your cranks use this plastic bush, I almost certainly gaurantee that this bush will be causing the play.

hi again,
not sure if anyone still reads this but i replaced the bottom bracket today and that fixed it. i'm a little disappointed though that the BB only lasted for about 7 months. I blame the Scott 24hr.
@ melonhead, i don't seem to have that bush you're referring to. mine is the standard GXP assembly. no spacers.
cheers
