2012 - the year that was

Just noticed on Training Centre that today I ticked over the 5,000 km mark for the year. Well up from an injury-marred last year, slightly up from the year before. Feeling moderately fit and hoping my upcoming busy period at work isn't going to set me back too far.

I only did the one race this year (The Mont), hoping to do a few more in 2013.

Excited about the progress made on trail advocacy and hoping the momentum will continue to build. Who'd have thought last year that we'd get some world-class tracks built in the middle of suburban Hornsby in time for Christmas?

Tell us about your year: highlights, lowlights, and your goals for the next 12 months.

GAZZA's picture

8000kms
400hrs of outdoor riding ( not including stationary trainer )
141000 Mtrs of climbing
Highlight, winning my Cat at the Red Centre Enduro
Low point, being ill for a genuine crack at NSW XC Champs.
My week spot, too much alcohol,
My New Years resolution, stop the grog for 6 months, loose a bit of weight and kick some F€?£*~g ass! Eye-wink

I'll post up my stats on Jan 1 as the years not finished yet Eye-wink

Logan's picture

10,800kms Ridden (Like Brian got a few more to add on, prolly close to 500km or so)
400h46mins
137,253m Climbed
243 Rides

Highlights: 25th at the Fling was a good result, took out 3rd at Beauie in A Grade earlier in the year and have had some good results Road NSW Races as well, including a great ride at Kurrajong.
Lowlights: Not doing myself justice in Europe from a lack of training, massive crash at Bathurst really hurt

Goals for next year: Get on the podium at Beauie, Consistent training, suffered from a lack of motivation during winter and make the selection in one of the NSW Road Races and finish in the front bunch.

Wow some impressive numbers above - ok here is the less impressive stats from a weekend warrior

3500kms of road and MTB

157 hours of making circles with my legs

229,818* calories burnt ( *Garmin error margin - just divide by 1000 or something)

Positives - top 20 ( category) finish Convict, and a chunk of time off for Fling and on hills....not letting any grubby MTB's pass me when riding my roadie and not letting any scumbag roadies pass me when on my MTB Sticking out tongue

Regrets; putting on weight over winter and not being motivated enough to get it off yet

New years resolution - shed the weight, get out more during the week and keep improving my times, category finishes....

Dicko's picture

10000 km of outdoor riding....maybe a few more before the end of the year.
165000m of climbing

6th - Capital Punishment
13th - Convict 100
5th - Husky 100
3rd - 3 Ring Circus
7th - Australian Marathon Championships
2nd - HMBA Club Championships
3rd - Scott 24 Masters 6
Consistent podiums in B Grade club rounds

Training does pay off.

Targets for 2013 - Podiums in XCM Marathons, Top 20 finish overall !

Bring on 2013 !!

4214km outdoors
0km indoors
57,500m of climbing

Positives from the year...
Investing in some decent LED's for night riding. Having young kids is not compatible with training. Night rides are the answer.
Seeing my 3 year old riding her balance bike.

Negatives from the year...
My wife banning me from riding in the Watagans alone at night. (fair enough, I know...)

2013? No racing. Well, maybe one. I will be aiming to finish the HuRT.

Definately the worst year on record for me.
It started well, quality, casual but still fun training rides with mates. Mont was a blast, then the convict... Thats when it went pear shaped. Big crash, air lift and lots of hospital time. Still recovering, but have found plenty of new friends that gave me lots of support.
Back into casual riding again...
So :
Maybe 1500 kms
No idea of metres climbed, but I did a huge climb... Probably in the order of 1500 metres... Sure it was in a medical helicopter, but I was wearing Lycra...
Next year.. We'll see. No plans - other than enjoy my rides and try not to kill myself...

Bit of an up and down year for me riding wise with busy work/study schedule
Not many Km but had some fun along the way and meet a lot of new riding friends

3811km (including too much on the indoor trainer and not enough on the MTB)
197hrs
19.2 ave speed
36342m of climbing

Hardly made any Tuesday night races. Only did the 1 other race (Rydal 8hr)
Still managed to go OK at the races I did make it too

I had an awesome time in 2012. I more then doubled my kilometres from 2011 and nearly doubled the hours. Thanks to the guys I train with and I’m looking forward to 2013

From Strava
Distance: 10,002.6km
Time: 420hr 47m
Total Ascent: 163,125m
Rides: 181

Highlights
I raced all 6 XCM Rounds

I was stoked with my time (05:11:56) at the Highland Fling where I cracked the 20km/h average for a full marathon. I also did on the Wollombi Wild Ride but I don’t think that counts as only being 75km.

A podium at the Scott24

The week straight after the Mont24 where six of us (Wayne, Craig, Dave, Steve, Conrad and me) did a road trip. We road Beechworth, Bright, Mt Beauty, Mt Buller and Nailcan Hill. I had such an awesome time. Below is a picture of us at Mt Buller heading to Stonefly.

Sorry to say that all my stats have been on the road - please don't shoot me - just playing the game Eye-wink

From Garmin Connect (slightly different to Strava for some reason) & some other random stuff...

Distance: 6,405km
Elevation Gain: 106,392m
Number of HC climbs: 21
Biggest climb: 1,577m
Highest absolute elevation reached: 2,750m
Most switchbacks in a single climb: 40
Number of times parked bike in a snow drift: one
Most vertical in a ride: 3,203m
Most vertical in a week: 4,740m
Number of punctures: zero
Number of crashes: zero

99% of this was solo. Lots of time to enjoy the scenery and clear the mind.

As for highlights? Hitting both sides of the Col de la Madeleine in the same ride (3,203m climbing), then getting back to a camp site & blagging a chair in front of a TV with some old French dudes to watch last hour or so of that day's stage while I tucked into a bit of baguette & tuna. Too many rides in the Pyrenees to list, but this one was a bit special. Awesome descents in Provence & the Black Forest. Holding the Ventoux summit to Faucon KoM. Beating Taylor Phinney in two separate Strava segments. Getting ridiculously close to many pros while at races & even exchanging a few words with a some. Driving up the final climb of a TdF mountain stage through masses of cheering fans (by means of a VIP sticker on the car). Being in Paris to see the first British rider win the TdF. Riding an entire TdF stage (cough!) the day before the race came to town (& somehow grabbing the KoM for this!).

Lowlights? Riding the last 2km on the 2nd side of the Col de la Madeleine Eye-wink

Here's a graphic of my year from Garmin Connect (just slapped together from screen grabs). It's been great! Some fantastic hikes and other stuff in there too, but I won't bore you with that!

Given the chronic neck injury I have, and at times in 2011 thought I might have to quit cycling altogether, this year has been pretty nice.

Cheers!

ps's picture

Ended up with 6k so about 1 less than last year.

The highlight would have to be the podiums in the masters team events. Pretty sure we got 3 from 3.
The low point was only managing 1,500km during the 4 months between May and August. I can confirm there is a direct relationship between training and results.

dangersean's picture

Well I thought I would share my year as I am quite chuffed with it!

453 rides
11354.51km
474 Hours
187,554m Elevation

Discovered cyclocross and travelled to all 6 rounds of the new national series. CX has taught me how to suffer on the bike at a whole new level.
Didn't do many MTB races as I cracked my race bike frame. So I did the willo and the husky 50 on my CX bike.
Got my new frame in time for the fling and managed a decent time and third place single speed.

Happy new year to everyone, bring on 2013!

Aproximately hope to crack 2500 hrs for 2013.

It feels like I live on my bike.

Brian's picture

1,600 hours. That is huge. Are you a bike courier?

obmal's picture

7046 kilometers
315 hours
112002 meters elevation gain
194 rides
1611 K's on the MTB

2012 Highlight: doing a few really long rides.

2013 is the year I start exploring the concept of Bikepacking.
