FWIW, clumsy as baggage handlers are, I think the average MTB will sustain much more damage on the trail (well - if it's been crashed a few times anyhow) then even they can dish out, even if your bike is only is a soft bag (so long as it's packed properly).
I have an EVOC bike bag which is purpose made for MTB.
I no longer need it so would be happy to sell for 200 o.n.o if you are interested. I bought it for $380.

I paid over 300 at CSC, sell for 140 to a good home, pick up from Cammeray.
