mate hard to see in with that low res. but that looks like a king brown !! not a snake you want to upset , if it is and my memory is good it is in the top 6 worlds most venomous snakes very aggressive and has a huge supply of venom.
Where did you see it ?

We don't get King Browns around here, they tend to like deserts.
It was crossing the Glow Worm Tunnel road.

Still the Eastern Brown can be just as long (Around 2.5m for a big one), is more agressive and going off the LD50 test it's venom is far more toxic and is believed t be responsible for the most snake bit deaths in Australia. King Brown just sound cooler;)

According to the LD50 test King Brown venom is not overly toxic they just produce a hell of a lot of it(more than any other snake)

Of course if you ranked spiders using the LD50 test you'd class the Funnelfeb as harmless. As Flavor Flave used to scream "don't believe the hype"

I wouldn't consider a LD50 of 1.5mg/kg as harmless (or even mostly harmless Eye-wink )

Where'd you get that data

last data I saw on funnelfeb venom gave it an LD50 of barely 0.16 mg/kg.

LD50 is calculated using mice. People aren't mice and F/web venom effects us differently. The same would be true of snake venom meaning using LD50 to rank venom toxicity on humans is rough at best.

The 0.16 mg/kg is the primate value, the 1.5mg/kg is mouse - remember smaller numbers mean more toxic - but yes the venom is likely to be significantly more toxic to humans than indicated by the mouse LD50.

LD50 is conducted on which ever animal species you wish to choose; usually mice or rats, but sometimes rabbits, dogs, guinea pigs, monkeys etc (human LD50 testing was never popular for some reason). Mice and rats are most convenient (cheap) and non animal techniques are starting to be accepted. When ever you see an LD50 it should reference both the species and the route of exposure (oral, parenteral (under the skin), dermal etc), if it is not mentioned it is probably oral.

For accute oral tox anything smaller than with a LD(oral)50 <200mg/kg is considered toxic.

Is it common for people to get bitten if they run over a snake? I almost run over a green tree python before that hail storm a couple weeks ago. People are telling me they have a nasty bite. I was not sure whether to pull on the anchors or go for a hop. Shin protectors might help a bit?

PE Crazy, crazy PE! Did you hop the Eastern Brown?

I stopped just before the python but almost needed to pull a chute to do it.

Love the science talk ppl, keep it up!

Cheers,

Never argue science with a guy that mixes his own chemicals:o)

Happy to concede the point to rob
