XX brakes - help needed

hi all,
i was just riding along when suddenly.... just kidding. in fact i was just replacing the pads in my rear brake today (which i've done lot's of times before).
so, i put the bleed block in to retract the pistons into the calliper, then put the pads in and noticed that they were much closer together than on previous pad swaps. i could hardly get the wheel in.
so i turned the contact point adjustment out a little and that opened the brake up a little but still not enough for the wheel to spin freely.
strange thing is that until today i thought the CP adjuster had nothing to do with the position of the pads.
anyway, as this improved the situation i thought i'd give it a couple more turns (it wasn't at the limit yet). however on the next quarter turn the CP adjuster with hose and everything came loose and fluid was leaking out.
i screwed it back in straight away, however it is very loose at the connection to the lever and there is visible movement when pulling the lever.
anyone come across this problem before?
thinking of taking the whole brake to the LBS and have them send it to SRAM for checking and an overhaul. somehow think that a normal bleed isn't going to fix this.
thanks

Sorry, it's called 'pad engagement point adjuster barrel', not contact point. My bad.
It's meant to do 24 clicks or two full revolutions. In my case there weren't any clicks to begin with and it just came apart....
Cheers

Had exactly the same thing happen to my Elixer CR's a while ago. Was fixed under warranty, a bike shop up the mountains (didn't buy the bike off them) sent them away and had them sorted pretty quick. They needed a full rebuild I think.

I have XX brakes as well and must say that adjuster on the lever is average at best

I cant even get mine to adjust out without it screwing the hose around with it which is quite annoying as one lever is solid as a rock Sad

I am looking to sell them soon and replace them with XT trail brakes, a much nicer brake and a lot cheaper as well i will add Smiling

I replaced the CR's with XT's.
Only issue with the XT's was that they needed an initial bleed. They worked fine but if you flipped the bike upside down to lube the chain, the brakes woud lose all pressure and lever would pull into the bars. They would pump up fine when flipped back over but I wanted them sorted. Quick bleed, thanks to BM_Epic, and they work perfect. Great, no-nonsense brakes with easy lever adjustment.

allright then, off to the shop it is.
was hoping it would just be a matter of screwing them back together and bleeding them.
doesn't sound like it.
and re the XT brakes, I'm actually a recent shimano to SRAM convert.
my wife's bike still has XT brakes and I can not remember a month where I don't have to service them because one of the pistons has either seized up again or they're completely stuck or they've developed a squeal that cleares the road ahead for miles.
the last couple month with the XX brakes were absolute bliss and I was very happy with them until they fell apart last night.
