Enduro, Endurance,,, Just putting it out there, it appears there’s a difference of opinion from one continent to another. We (Aussies) put Enduro into the category of greater than 6hours XC type race?? Yes, No ?? I’m open to be corrected. The Canadians and Europeans put Enduro into the category of timed special sections and transport stages. Very similar concept to Motorcycle Enduro’s or even Rally car racing. So we have XC, DH, AM, DJ, Trials, and Enduro. (I may of missed some genres.) Or is an Enduro a long XC race or simply a AM race. Basically in Canada we went on a Trail ride with a heap of people that loved riding mountain bikes with time in between sections and hangout with a good dose of camaraderie and we almost forgot we were actually racing. Then my Canadian friends say “ what aboot hookin us up for that Enduro race in Canberra, 12hours sounds wicked, should have my 180mm travel rig sorted by then to bring along”. Ummmmm no. I've never done anything over a 6hour race and it was great and camaraderie was what really stood out in my mind. Anyways whats other peoples opinion

Well, The Scott 24 is kind of like that if you ride in a team of 6. Great comeradie, go & hamer out a lap. come back & recover & do the same 5 hrs later.
thats really a series of sprints. with a boys weekend away.
they also now have the 6+6 catergory, where you stop riding at night.

A true enduro to me is 100km....in one go. without rest. Or a solo 24....

I interpret an Enduro is a lap course for a fixed amount of time whether it be 3hr, 4hr, 8hr 24hr etc. A marathon is of a fixed distance and normally would be 50km or greater. An event just offering a 50km distance the 50km would get referred to as a marathon, an event offering a 50km and 100km, the 100 would be the marathon and the 50 be the half marathon.

+ 1 for Brians explaination. Enduro = timed based longer than your traditional XCO (Which aims for winning times under 2hr) Marathon = Fixed distance

...and then for those in the northern hemisphere there is this definition

I think the enduro racing should describe long mainly downhill races suited to 6 inch travel AM bikes as described by the enduro world series rules. Long XC races should be called marathon XC.

Yep, I did a "womens only enduro" in Squamish, BC last year and it was a point to point race with 2 timed downhill sections (and the main winners were the ones with the fastest combined times for the 2 dh sections). The race only took 45mins, so i was confused as to how that was an 'enduro'.... but i worked out that their definition and our definition are very different. Our enduro's are 3hrs+ I reckon (Tumut has a 3hr enduro). I guess if you are going hard for 3hrs, that does require some endurance.
Confusing huh?

Yeah confusing, and it’s going to be on the world stage, the ones I did where just at club level. We had to be fully self sufficient if you happened to have any mechanical issues and they used like a inferred marker on your rims, frame & forks from memory and they scanned it at the end of the race. An approved helmet was mandatory but it didn’t have to be full face. That first link is very new, late Feb 2013 the official rules are released. I find it interesting where it states “the sport developing outside the rigid structures of the UCI”. It’ll be interesting to see whether it catches on over here. Pretty impressive some organisers taking on an event at world title level without the UCI. At the end of the day its an All Mountain (Trail Ride) race and there is going to be a heap of competitors wanting to be a part of it as you need to be more of an all-rounder type rider than specifically DH or XC orientated.
