I bricked my brand new Garmin Edge 500 just as I was about to take it on it's first ride. The screen came up with "Software Missing" ! Fuelled up on coffee and carboshotz I spent an angry half an hour on the computer and eventually found a bootstrap program that allowed me to get things going again. I updated to the latest version of firmware and it seems to have performed ok.

How did you brick it and what was the site you used download the new software from?

I did an update to a newer version of firmware (version 3.0 to 3.2) and when you first turn the Edge 500 on after the update it validates and loads the software and then the screen goes blank. After about 30 seconds I thought it had switched itself off and tried to turn it on. What I should have done was waited a bit longer as the screen brings up a display and says it has loaded the new software.

You need to search for a program called,
Edge 500 RGN SW v3_00.zip.

I found it at this location, https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3tOe3oU8dOEVENV...

You might have to log in to Google to access it.

You download a zip file which contains three files, one is a text file which will tell you to drag one of the other files onto the exe file. That will start a little program that connects to your Garmin. Once you've done that you upload a bit of software to the Edge 500 which then allows you to connect to your computer and update in the normal way using Garmin Web Updater program.

This time when I switched on the Edge 500 I waited longer until it had gone through its processes and it now seems to be ok.

Why it's called Bootstrapping.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, I've had no dramas with mine so far but good to have a few links to ways of fixing it if it ever does go wrong. Smiling
