Highland Fling Training Weekend (28/29th Sept)

Hi everyone.
Firstly - I thought about putting this in the 'non-race paid event', but then could get the venue details up, nor the fact that it lasted for 2 days. If I'm wrong and need to move it I shall - apologies.

The Highland Fling is coming, and people are starting to think about training and preparation. I have noticed a fair few messages coming to me recently about coaching, and although I am flattered, I just don't have any time at the moment to take on more athletes than I currently have.
With this in mind, and based on the success of the pre-event videos from last year (thanks again JP) I spoke with Huw at Wild Horizons about running a training weekend.
Turns out that he loved the idea.

So - I'm pleased to say that on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of Sept, myself and Kyle Ward (of Rockstar Racing and Pepper Coaching) alongside Huw and the Wild Horizons team, will be running a 2 day training course - down on the trails and race loop of the Fling - to help you prepare for the event. Technical skills, drafting techniques, climbing techniques, nutrition, training planning leading into the event, equipment selection - the lot. No question will be a silly question, and by the end I can guarantee you will be faster at the Fling, or 1/2 Fling.
You'll also ride the parts of the course that are closed to the public other than on race-day.
I hope it will be a lot of fun, with a lot of knowledge shared over the weekend. Oh - and I reckon you'll go home with some sore legs too Eye-wink
If you are interested, please reach out to me with questions.
I'm posting this not through a desire to generate 'sales' - its a course that will run on limited numbers only, and I'm confident we will fill it up - but because I know how many questions come up about The Fling, and about Marathon racing in general. I'd love you guys (nobmobbers) to get in first.

A few more details are here...

Rob - if this falls under the 'blatantly commercial' side of things - I do apologise, just wanted to spread the word.

How many participants Anthony?

Hi JP - the target is 14 or so. A pretty small group - so lots of 1:1 work we hope....

I have no doubt that it will be a great weekend. If I can fit it in to my schedule I'll be there!

Would ordinarily jump at this opportunity especially as this will be my first half fling, but an extreme lack of fitness and inability to find time to train means I'd waste a spot. I would be keen for future sessions though once I've got a more structured training regime and baseline fitness established. I'll keep an eye posted for these Eye-wink

Isn't that what the weekends about?
It sounds like an ideal opportunity for someone like yourself to get in there and get some extra training and expert advice.
From what you're saying about yourself its exactly what you need! Smiling

For general punters (like me), I reckon you don't know what you don't know until you spend time with someone like Anthony, and I'm sure Kyle too. I only spent a couple of hours with Anthony and Jenny Fay when we made the highland fling race prep videos last year, but I learned more in that couple of hours and I had in the last couple of years. Sometimes it's the simplest piece of advice that gets you to break an old habit and see immediate improvement in your speed.

Valid comments Gazza, it's the entry prerequisite of "need to be able to ride 50km each day" that I know I can't handle. The knowledge and skills on offer would be awesome but wasted on me at this stage in life... I just can't get on the bike enough between a full scale renovation, 2 week old baby and a 15 month old little boy...

Next year I'll (hopefully) be able to afford the time... I rode the dam today (5th ride since Nov 2012) and whilst I did 2 laps around the 43 minute mark I was absolutely wasted... Oh, and we stopped a number of times around the loop too! To put it in perspective, my PB there is 33:15... Not super quick but competitive at least... Those we're the days Eye-wink

@Andyfev - keep plugging away at those rides around the dam - the most important thing is just to ride regularly, and every now and again go harder than you think sensible.
You'd be surprised at how quickly you can get fit.
You're right, if you cant ride 50km a day, it probably would have been a battle for you to do the riding of the weekend. Its by no means a 'smash-up', but we will be riding most of the Fling loop over the two days.
Thanks @JP and @Gazza - the cheques are in the post Eye-wink

Thanks for the encouragement Antsonline... Just the advise to ride harder than is sensible (on occasions) will help heaps... Really looking forward to the Fling (half) just hope it doesn't chew me up and spit me out Eye-wink
