Pedal power= bushfire donations

Had a fleeting idea, to put it bluntly, these fires are just ridiculous and I for one am wondering what to do, as much as I'd like to don a suit and fight fires it probably wouldn't help having an untrained wannabe run about, then my thoughts turned to nobmob, this is fairly large community and I then thought about organising a charity ride, then again remembered I have no experience in this and what with the current conditions it wouldn't make much sense to have large groups in the bush.

So I finally concluded that we could all self regulate donations between us, and the genius sum?

1D - 1K

I'm sure you can decipher this equation, but basically for every kilometre you ride this weekend it'll cost you a dollar. For e.g my partner and I will be heading up to ourimbah on Saturday and we'll end up doing three laps between us, so that's thirty bucks, not a huge amount but there's strength in numbers.

So here is the link-

Like I said, just an idea, but gets us thinking we may be helping our blue brothers, will post my results for what riding I did on Sunday!

Good idea, where would we send monies?.

other options:
Donate X% of salary (many do this anyway)
X% of entry fees to MTB events nation/state wide. (any event type that uses the bush eg orienteering, trail running, etc.)
For 12 to 24 hour events get yourself sponsorship at e.g. 50 cents a km to be donated to RFS.

Think it would be good if MTB set the standard for raising money from MTB activities.
(MTBA - hint)

There are many charities that could be supported, but given the likelihood of fires getting worse over the next years, it may assist protecting riding areas we currently have.

Would just make so much sense, for this idea I thought the rfs.nsw would be a good destination for the donations.

Nice idea, if you want to get a bit of momentum/profile and have a focal point you can create a strava club for people to join which then displays their km etc. Example being

http://www.strava.com/clubs/1200kms-for-kids-cha...

It would exclude people who don't use strava but they don't count anyway Smiling

I ride but dont have a full time job so this will exclude me for this otherwise i all for it as i have only worked 18 hrs this week , 8 last week and don't know when the next working day is

Everyone's situation is different.

Further to this, are you happy with the NoBMoB name to be put against a strava club for the purposes of this fundraising? If you are I'll setup that group ASAP and post details

It's been there a while, just not promoted at all:

brakeburner's picture

Has it not been promoted so you can stay at the top Rob! Ha!

Rob's picture

I believe Phil is always in the lead, no?

Nah... I figured if anyone cared they would find it. Cat's out of the bag now, huh? Eye-wink

Pete B's picture

Yep, and I'm in! Eye-wink

Back to topic though, sounds like a good idea. How are we going to work it?

There's a small typo on the linked page

"Visit out website for ride information, social and race calendar and more:"

Thanks Smiling

I'm heading out tomorrow.

Discodan's picture

Yep, I racked up 38 this morning. I doubt I'll get any more in over the weekend so I'll deposit that on monday

Wollondilly council are also running a fund raising day on the 30th November at Bargo Sports grounds. All money raised will go to buying the local RFS much needed fire fighting equipment. Hopefully some of the locals, if any on here, will be able to make it as they worked damn hard with only 2 damaged homes, 2 destroyed homes and 10 destroyed sheds in 15,600 hectares of burnt land Sad

Mentioned to a friend about this post yesterday and she kindly gave me a bag of cash as a donation, when I left and counted it there was fifty bucks in it, at first I was grateful for the genorisity and then thought bugger, I have to do fifty k's now!! So I pulled out the roadie. Say may call it it soft, I prefer to call it cross training.
Ended up doing Terrey hills shops,Akuna Bay,West Head,Church Point and return. To be honest if I hadn't posted this earlier in the week, I wouldn't of got on the bike today, so all good and it did double my own donation so win, win all round.

Any other takers?

Pete B's picture

I didn't get out today but I did do 60km yesterday so I'll donate mine later today.

brakeburner's picture

That's the way!

andyfev's picture

I'm up for $64! Where are we donating? Directly to RFS or is there a NobMob group?

See the OP & use the Westpac link here:
