Looking forward to this! First race for the year. Smiling Aim will be to finish 4 hours riding solo.

andyfev's picture

Looking forward to this one myself and a similar objective... Hoping to be consistent and rather slow Eye-wink first solo 4 hrs for me aiming to punch out 50km

Antsonline's picture

....is my excuse for doing the lazy 4hr team option! Hopefully I'll get a few dry, fast, laps done!

Keep that rain away!

Captain Chunder's picture

Hi all - so how does the Ourimbah track compare to terrey hills - will you average the same speed?

This will be my first 4hr.

CC

Also - if doing it solo with no support crew, how do you manage water refills etc? is there a specific zone where you can put a bag/box with spare bottles etc and food?

parking - if your doing the 4hr - i assume you can get out before the 7hr finishes?

staffe's picture

Test rode it last Sunday and it was good. With the dry weather forecast for this week it'll be quite close to very good I hope. Procured a new rear tyre today for the event to give me a bit more forward traction where I need it.

NathanC's picture

I think it would be hard to compare Ourimbah to Terry Hills. The track is basically all single track and I think average speeds would be much slower than your average T/Hills combination of fire road and bits of single track. I find an hour of riding at Ourimbah much more taxing although I only ever ride there during a race.

Its easy to do the 4 hour unsupported, just take an esky or small fold out table and dump it on one side or the other of the finish line. Don't be afraid of stopping for 30 odd seconds to eat/drink properly, its much less than you will loose if you don't fuel appropriately for 4 hours of racing.

Good luck, start easy and finish strong!

Getting out after the finish of the 4 hour race is no problem.

Captain Chunder's picture

i assume "slow" pace is ok? just start at the rear of the field?

Whats a reasonable target for the 4 hrs in terms of laps? i was thinking 6 ~ 48km? Would that be a pace that didnt cause you to be a permanent road/track block?

CC

Antsonline's picture

Dont worry too much about pace Captain. At some point pretty much everyone will either be passed or have to pass someone else.
I have heard that there may be a little (iddy biddy) bit more climbing in the lap than before - which will give a bit more opportunity for overtaking.

However, assuming a typical full lap at Ourimbah, the fastest cats will be around it in 26-28mins (depending on config) and thne it could take anywhere up to 50mins for a lap for some people, maybe more.
6 laps in 4 hours will see you amongst the real middle of the action - overtaking as well as being overtaken. Should be a blast, and its certainly not the world champs, so shouldnt be too aggressive (although it is a race, and sometimes people get the 'mist'...).

Say hi if you pass me or I pass you. I'll be in some pretty 'out there' lycra I suspect....

Captain Chunder's picture

Thanks all for the words of encouragement. Done plenty of triathlons in teh past, but no bike racing and no MTB.

i will be easy to spot...i have an ability to Chunder and ride, preference is to the left.... Smiling

andyfev's picture

I'll be starting towards the rear too and most likely staying there. I'll be easy to spot in our team jersey Slow N Reckless of which I am both and usually simultaneously Eye-wink

@Captain - my first MTB race was the last round at James Estate (thoroughly recommend getting out there next year) and everyone who passed me (and there were quite a few - some damn fast guys and girls) had great manners and passed safely. Some even had a bit of a chat with me before asking to overtake and offered words of encouragement. My experience was that the rocky trail events offer a great intro to racing for newbies and wouldn't hesitate in entering another event run by them when my time, and fitness, allows.

Good luck to everyone on sat - 4hrs solo at Ourimbah at race pace will be a solid workout Eye-wink

Scottboy's picture

You wont be the slowest rider out there I will bevas race marshall it is rare I get back in under 1 hr , there is always track to repair or bad stick or rocks on the track which we tried to clear but we like to have fun and ride hard too and if you do pass me it will be on the climbs only I smash the downs at Ourimbah unless a rider is in front . I wont be there for race start but will be there on my trusty Scott Genius ..

mike95's picture

will be interesting if they add in the "demtel" climb. last years CCOMTB 3hr enduro had this climb. tough, but good place to overtake if your a mountain goat.

hawkeye's picture

... and not at all fondly! That just about did me in the first time I did a race there. A real shock to the system: showed me I was nothing like fit.

Hopefully I'm better prepared now. Smiling

Scottboy's picture

Im happy with the track im riding at last yrs race and hate climbing , where is this demtel climb ?

andyfev's picture

@Smiley, you'll most likely find me dismounted in a ditch on the downhills Eye-wink hahaha... In all seriousness though I'm hoping to be within 15 mins per lap of the elites but not sure how I'll go when I reach the 3 hour mark

bmar560's picture

I'm in.. my first 4 hour race.

Captain Chunder's picture

Hi All - just how early do you need to get to these events?

I see rego is open 7-8am, but briefing/redy to ride at 8:45 - do you need to get there at 7 to avoid rushing or does 7:30 work?

Also - time from Mona vale to get there - google say 75 mins, but i dotn trust google.....

CC

PS - Red Specialised Epic, with HHCC kit, so say hi when you lap me!

hawkeye's picture

This dose of the dreaded lurgy has got me good and proper. Been fighting it since Tuesday evening. Going to work in the iffy air conditioning yesterday was a mistake.

At this stage I'm a 75% chance of being a no show.

If someone wants a free entry to the 4hr PM me. You'll just need to stump up the $15 day license insurance fee if you're not a mtba member.

staffe's picture

At that time of day I allow 1.5 hours to get there and I'm going from North Curly via Warringah road and then over to mona vale road through St Ives and so on.

I'll leave at 6am to be there by 7.30. Registration is normally a quite quick process.

That should work for you as well coming from Mona Vale, most probably a few minutes quicker for you than coming from NCC.

Cheers and good luck!

Staffan

Captain Chunder's picture

So best plan is park the car, leave the bike in it, head in and register?

Back to the car to get organised?

andyfev's picture

Yep, park and register then relax and get your gear together. From Mona Vale as using Mona vale road you'll need around 1hr 15mins to 1.5hrs door to door. Plenty of cops early in the morning too.

Enjoy the event and remember that the Red Specialized Epic will no doubt pass other riders too Eye-wink

Scottboy's picture

You nearly found me in a ditch on my first lap hit a tree with my head , cracked the helmet all before the first fire road climb I was on the side of the track up the top of fire trail supporting my pain ended up finishing the lap tho

andyfev's picture

Sorry to hear that mate, it' was pretty choppy in places and easy to get into trouble. I brushed a tree with my shoulder knocking me off into the bush but only a graze nothing serious. More painfully, I was in agony with cramps on my last and very slow lap. Had to dismount and hobble around until the cramps broke. Walked long meadow to the top. Pretty sore right now. Eye-wink

It was another great event but I'm certainly not in any reasonable shape to do a 4 hour solo.

sikllama's picture

Sorry to hear that @smiley - ourimbah certainly can be a tough place to ride let alone race! Well done to everyone who raced today, conditions would have been perfect I imagine.

Antsonline's picture

Yep - there were a few good men down today. I think most people had 'a moment' out there, some got up and carried on, others had worse luck.
Hopefully nothing too serious suffered by anyone.

I had a lay-down whilst getting over-enthusiastic and trying to hit a hot lap. Traffic seemed light, so I really opened the throttle.....then I regretted it.
Winded (I have a graze and bruise on my sternum!) and sore, I learnt my lesson!

Still, a great day out. I managed to get one fast lap done, which was an aim.

As a separate discussion - but much discussed today - are trails such as Ourimbah, Awaba, Mnt Annan, Yellowmundee seeing so much use that they are now necessitating a dually to go really fast? Braking bumps, washed out roots and bare-bones flavour to the trails - its brutally hard on a hardtail (I expect)....

andyfev's picture

I was thinking the same thing. I actually felt like I'd been hit by a truck at the end even my arms were cramping up... and I was on a dually!!

Ourimbah has almost become 'all mountain' trail and requires a lot of technical skill to navigate safely. It's def my preferred riding style but I'd enjoy it much more on an all mountain bike and not trying to go as fast as possible as in a race.

Then I had to climb the big arse fireroad hill after the race to reach my car... Ants, the destroyed looking bloke that said congrats to you on that fireroad where youd stopped was me... I still had a fair bit of climbing to go after I saw you! Congrats once again on your team win and freakishly quick lap times Eye-wink

chrischris's picture

I've just finished building my new rigid 'Niner.

I've got to say that I am LOVING the rigid SS scene - however it is rough. Really rough.

I almost beat my personal best at Awaba the other day, and my wrists took a pounding. I wouldn't class Awaba as 'All Mountain' at all, but Mother Nature has taken a toll on the course.

I wouldn't be keen to 'race' on my rigid. So much concentration needed at all times. A dually sure does help.
How many of the top guys are now racing on dual suspension rigs?

bmar560's picture

Arghh my Quads are still cramping in a certain positions.

Really enjoyed today, managed 6 laps in the 4 hours. My first lap was as slow as my last lap and I had a "mechanical" on the last lap. At the 2nd lap I was able to find my groove and did the lap just under 37mins. Lap times got slower after that.

First time at Ourimbah and really liked it. Really tight singletrack and "the drop" where my heart always get left behind at the top of it. Some bits were slippery and nearly lost it at a corner today, my shoulder hit a tree and saved me from falling over Smiling

Lowlight of the day was when on the last lap another rider hit me from behind and snapping my rear derailleur cable in the process. Luckily I was able to fix it sort of and ride away although I wasn't able to use the smallest 2 sprockets.
