When:
Saturday, 22 March, 2008 - 12:00
Duration:
24 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Ride Database Entry:
Majura Pines
Meeting Point:

Majura Pines

Details:

Due to the demise of the NZO 24hour I'm off to Canberra to see if my manic training schedule has done me any good, unfortunately it's a solo only 24hr race but they also have a 6+6 hour race where you race 6 hours on Sat. then 6 hours on Sun. if you'd prefer to have the night off.
Now racing for 24hours is not as hard as one may think, you just doddle along at your own pace until you've had enough, plenty of people only do 10-15 laps or bang out 30 plus laps to see what you can do! It's at Easter so the opportunity begs for some fun Canberra riding.

I guess the website could be handy http://www.solo24hour.com.au/
Deep down, "you know you want to."

John, you are insane mate. Sticking out tongue

Carlgroover's picture

I reckon I could place higher if the race was longer, I don't have the speed but I am very stubborn, does anybody do a 36 hour race? Anyhow I'm planning 300km in 24hrs and I'm Ay-up equipped now so less hassle than last year at the NZo 24.
Bring it on.

ar_junkie's picture

In mind... I'll be overseas so I'm going to have to miss this one.
On being stubborn - have you tried AR mate?
Eye-wink

Carlgroover's picture

I'm not expecting a huge turnout for this one, I'll be a bit surprised if anyone clicks the little star, but Shaun you were my best chance. Are you going OS to compete? I haven't done any AR races but I do check a few out on the net and would love it, especially the Speights coast to coast, but the thought of training for kayaking and running as well would make my life a little hectic, I used to do triathlon but that was BC (before children), I'd like to be going into this race as lean as you Shaun but I've only lost 6kgs not 16.
Steve, you'd be great at one of these, you looked fresh as, after a very fast Highland Fling.

I wanted to do this but my helper has shot through and you cant do it without one so maybe next year.

Carlgroover's picture

I spoke to my dear wife, and she would be able to support you also, in the rules 1 helper can support up to 4 riders so 2 should be fine, in fact busier would help to pass the time in between laps for her.
We could do a ride this weekend to talk it over.
John.

The Cape Epic but am #661 on the waiting list so I doubt it.
Was hoping to combine a mate's wedding and 966kms of racing through some of SA's most picturesque countryside... Hopefully next year Sad

Damien's picture

I was planning on being self suficient anyway my buddy was really only coming along to fulfil the requirement of having someone there. My wife cant help yet what with two young children in tow so if it was ok it would great to do the race.

Carlgroover's picture

I'll call you tonight after training.

Carlgroover's picture

The 966km is one thing, but 18529m of climbing has gotta hurt, the race looks great and I hope you get in next time. You would only have to do that race once as your never going to forget it.
John.

Damien's picture

I am now doing this cant wait.

dreggsy's picture

I'm there.
I'm racing a mate whos after a top 5 finish,
I'm going for top 10 overall.
I had a disappointing run last year after being ranked 10th, then crashing at the 8hr mark while feeling strong.
Hoping to do alot better this time as its final qualifying for the world champs.

Carlgroover's picture

Two crazy NoBMoBers that want to ride for 24 hours! Neither of us have any sleep or extended rest periods planned into the race, I'm also finding that the anticipation is too much, only 15 sleeps to go.
Smiling

Carlgroover's picture

Wow 3 crazies, maybe there's more to come? Would you go to the Worlds if you qualify?

dreggsy's picture

I'd love to.
But I'm going this year to support two grumpy mates of mine hopefully.
I'm waiting until i hit 40 before i enter myself.
This will give me a few more years to get ready for it.

Damien's picture

I would of thought there were a few more crazys than that.
Two weeks to go so will be getting as many 8 - 10 hour sleeps in as possible with minimal preperation under my belt I think that is my best chance I can at least be well rested for the race.

dreggsy's picture

So who's ready?
Who's not ready?

Damien's picture

Ready or not I am there just a few more things to sort out and one more easy ride at Terry Hills tonight before putting the batteries on charge.

Carlgroover's picture

Major packing tomorrow night but I can't wait to start the race. Also Dreggsy, Damien and I are going to pitch our tents beside each other your welcome to do the same if you wish, you having been there before would know the best spot? We should also take each others mobile No's to find each other, I'm planning on getting there before lunch on Friday so could reserve some tent spots.
Cheers John.

Carlgroover's picture

Do they have a bike shop, bike servicing and descent food at the race as other races do?
Thanks John

dreggsy's picture

Bike shop,
Yep Onya Bike Belconnon will be there
Just bring as many spares as possible.
tyres, derailleur hangers, special tools for your bike only, etc

Food is decent, lots of BBQ goodness.
Pasta as well.

facilities here
http://solo24hour.com.au/events/facilities.asp

I'm staying with friend Friday night, but i'll be at the
Dirtworks tent.
Look for the Ellsworth, KHS and BMC banners,
We will have a very competent mech crew, so if you ask nicely, they could sort you out.

Carlgroover's picture

I'll look forward to seeing you and I have a stack of spares packed also my friend Craig is coming down to help out, he's also great on the tools.
John.

Rob's picture

Hey John, don't forget to give your camera to the pit crew and get some happy snaps before/during/after.

Have a great weekend - hope there's no breakages to bikes or bodies!

Carlgroover's picture

Charged the battery and cleared the card last night, the training must have worked as I kicked some butt at the club round on Sunday, being 7.5kg lighter must be helping on the hills, I know I said I'd lose 8kg but this race is 2 weeks earlier than the original plan.
Cop u later John

dreggsy's picture

Right,
Car is packed, all i have to do now is carbo-load, sleep, eat more, sleep

I'm aiming to get there 9am tomorrow, to stake a claim of territory.
I've been eating all day, plus running around getting stuff organized.
Finally have been able to sit down and dig into a big bowl of pasta.

Will catch up with some friends and go for a pedal around Stromlo with them nice and slowly.

I ended up splilling a drop of hydro fluid on my brake pads, so I took them out and cooked them over a gas flame for 1 minute each, work as good as new,

See you all tomorrow or Saturday

Carlgroover's picture

for me so maybe 11.30 I'll be there, I'll be in a white commodore wagon with a trailer full of bikes, 3 for me and 2 for the kids.
I too better start sleeping.
