New York City

Does anyone know of any good 1/2 day or 1 day adventures from or around New York?

Possibly there in April for other reasons than riding but may go insane without burning off some energy.

Open to non-riding adventures too.

I rented a clunker bike once with a colleague and did a lazy lap of Manhattan Island, it's a good ride at 50km and takes in all the interesting areas like 5th Ave, Harlem,. Central Park etc. It will be cold in April though

plenty of good bike tours through central park, can't remember the name of the one I did but it was just down the road from Columbus circle.
Not really a mtb adventure but hey, a bike's a bike right?
As for non-bike adventures, here's also a company that does walking tours around new york for either half or full days, I did it in the pouring rain and it was still fantastic.

Simon, as Discodan mentioned, there is a dedicated cycle path (pretty much all separated from pedestrians) that runs around the edge of the island. I rented a clunker as well and rode through Central Park, then around the island and then across to Brooklyn and then back. If you get a road bike, there are a bunch of guys that ride out to Rockaway and Jones Beaches on Saturday mornings from a bike store on the Lower East Side (forgotten the name but it's a large one). You'd want to do that one as part of a group.

In terms of riding on the street, I reckon it's safer than Sydney. As long as you hold your line and are consistent then the drivers manage with that. There's a lot of commuting and it's an accepted way to get around. Just beware of the 'dedicated' bike paths along the side of the roads as pedestrians get in the way a lot.

There are heaps of 'Citi bikes' (sponsored by the bank) that you can rent and drop off at hundreds of different spots.

If you can drive, there's some good single track through the State Forests down west of Tuckerton, though it's a 90 minute drive south.

If you feel parched, New York Brewing Company on West 44th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues has a heap of seasonal craft beers on tap. Tell the girls at the door ol' Spokey Dokey told you to come, and they'll look after you. Pop in a few doors down to Birdland (not the original on 52nd St that is now closed) and listen to some groovin' toons.

Have fun.
