Altering someone else's trail

I never rant and I'll try not to here...
Please don't alter tracks to make them easier, if you can't ride something, keep practicing until you can.
It's dangerous and it's plain disrespectful to the person that built the trail.
Luckily I didn't crash tonight but someone had moved a rock at the bottom of a very steep roll off and i managed to spot it last second only because I had slowed down to show a mate the best way down.

But it is something that will always happen unfortunately!!

There's a high probability it's not a rider, maybe a walker or kids?

...but it never hurts to get a reminder. I have also seen plenty of this stuff going on, especially at Route 66 and Red Hill.

I agree with ditty, Red Hill tracks are getting wider every time I go there.(not to mention what I think of motos out there)

Sad

So I always treat the first lap as a sighting-in lap, and let rip after that.

Too many little potential gotchas where people move things about that you can't see until you're committed.

What about moving loose rocks from sandy slopes? I have sometimes moved these on a couple of the steep tracks out a Terrey hills when I am about to ride down, they aren't large, just smallish rocks that have been dislodged and end up in the tracks. Is this a no no too?

... like those out at Terrey Hills, I don't think it is a problem. Someone is eventually going to come along with a bulldozer and flatten it all out again anyway....

On single track, it's a bit different, although the idea that a track "belongs" to someone who is entitled to shape it the way he / she wants is a bit questionable unless it is an officially sanctioned and maintained trail, in which case it is more of a collective approach to trail evolution, or it's on private land and actually "owned" by someone.

Sometimes one person's trail maintenance is another's trail desecration....

Yeah it's such a shame the damage Motos do on our local trails , the destruction is so wide it's ridiculous the damage to trails they have done at red hill over the years is just horrendous !!!!
They fact they they totally destroy a line then we have to make a small line around the one they have wrecked then I see them using that line too and making the single trail even wider ... Such a same the guys are totally disrespectful and just wankers really riding trails that are dripping in mud and making massive wheel divots ... Also turning single trails into wide multi lane trails .
I have built a few trails around the place can't name where but all have held up fine for years until the Motos find it then it's wrecked within months... Really sucks all that weeks of work gone and yes weeks of work!
Sometimes I feel like going up to red hill the moto circuit up in the middle and taking a shovel to there jumps would only take about an hours work to totally dig out all the take offs and landings and well then the moto pricks would possible realise the damage you do everythime you ride a mountain bike built trail !!!!! Mmmmmm one day !!!

kinda hijacked.. bit I will bite.

The Moto's up red hill are generally a pack of dickheads, in my experience they are the types that don't give a crap about the legality of riding there so they really don't give a flying f$&@ about what you think nor what damage they at doing, they are very aggressive right off the bat and will tell you to get f#%€d when you tell them they are not allowed there.. no matter how polite you are they have their "bogan f#%^ you" speech already cocked and loaded just waiting for someone to trigger it..
I get a wee bit annoyed every time I ride there, they stuffed the rim ride and we are just one or two more storms away from the single track section in the middle being wrecked as well.
I'd not care that they ride up there, but we get the worst of them who rip the crap out of the place..

Too true obmal.
Have you seen the latest damage done last week by the 4x4's.
The motos' up there are ever increasing. I've long given up talking to them for the same reason as you. Don't like the agro.
They ride with impunity because none of the land owners, the Council or the Cops seem willing to take any action. Yes the Rim trail was brilliant before they got to it.
Sorry OP for the hijack..
