Looking for the best XC singletrack within 1-2 hours drive

We have a car for the long weekend and would like to check out the best singletrack outside of the immediate area. Unfortunately we would be able to stay overnight anywhere. Any suggestions for a great day ride, preferably at least 2+ hours long?

Andy has posted a ride at Orimbah XC on Easter Monday.......There you go

orimbah xc,definatly the best single track close to sydney, sparrow hill a bit further away but beats it hands down.

If you want technical sniggle-ish (it's a bit wide, but the funerere rocks and drops make that forgivable) GNR from top of Finches Line to Western Commission track is the best 10Km around!

For smooth and flowing though, would have to agree with the other guys - take a guide/GPS/or some good luck (it's a bit hard to follow for the first time) and cruise Ourimbah.

We are planning on the orimbah ride on Monday. It looks like Sparrow Hill is 4+hours from Manly, is that true? That is a bit much for us for a day ride.

Well, Sparrow Hill in 4 hours is easy even with stops. You'd have to be risking your license to do it under 3 so aim for somewhere in the middle.

Look on the Sparrow Hill page and hit the directions link under 'Meeting Point'.

Oh... we've forgotten Lisdale - it's also got a great XC circuit but is a little further than Ourimbah. Someone recently told me the graveyard part of Ourimbah was flooded so maybe that's a factor.

Going to Ourimbah on Monady and forgive me if I am wrong, you are new to Sydney, why don't you go and do some of the trails up at the Blue Mounatins, hasn't got the best single track trails but has great veiws and would be a great place to visit, check out Tony"s (The Fat Hippy) web page as he is a local up that way and has most track sorted. http://www.thefathippy.com

Get up early & drive. Ride till lunch, fish & chips at the Huski pub, go for a swim, drive home. Much more fun than Canberra unless you are picking up some porn & fireworks in Fishwick.

abouts in Nowra?
I will be down there soon, "work"...
so I could take my bike!!!!

Have a look at www.scum.asn.au. They may have taken some of the maps down as they are negotiations with NSW SF to formalize the access, so try www.archive.org.

Closest to town is Cabbage Tree Lane. It's a very small area with a 6km loop they use for racing but I'm sure there is more there. It's very flat, but tight, twisty and fast. A lot of fun to put it in the dog and just go for a blat.

The other areas are south of Nowra

Butterfly Road. Drive through South Nowra and then turn left on to Forest Road, drive along here for a while then Butterfly road is on the left (it's a dirt road) just as the main road sweeps around to the right. Follow this road till you get to a quarry, park here. As you look at the quarry from the road, the single track starts DH on your left. A ripping short little down hill starts you off.

Currumbene Road. Drive a little futher South and Turn left at Comberton(?) Grange Road. Drive along here for a short while then turn left (between the farms and the forest). When you get to a majorish T section stop here. Track starts on the North side of the road. A Flattish track with a few log roll-overs.

If the weather is good, then my vote would be:
1. Red Hill
2. Oxford Falls
3. Great Northern Road
4. Kincumber

If the weather is poor to average, then:
1. Menai
2. Ourimbah

We would love to check out more of the Blue Mountains. We rode the Oaks trail a few weeks ago and were a bit disappointed. Anyone interested in giving us a tour of a nice area on Saturday? Or advice on the best singletrack? I think we missed the turn for the best part last time.

Rob's picture

It's funny you say that Maria - first time I rode The Oaks figured it didn't seem worthy of all the rave reviews. Guess this is one of those trails that grows on you is all I can say, have a blast on every visit these days.

Although the section down from the helipad to gate is a blast that's best done with a few nutters at maximum speed to really appreciate the run - just don't contemplate what might happen! The sniggle at the bottom (by the gate I mean) is also top notch stuff, but you always leave wishing it were longer.

The atmosphere of the Woodford to Glenbrook charity race (Careflight Classic) has also left good memories of The Oaks - how often do us mere mortals get to say we completed a race at an average speed above 25Km/h - and only 15 mins behind the winner? Laughing out loud

track in the Mountains? Well I did organise one a while ago but despite a good turn out I couldn't ride it myself as I broke my collarbone the day before the ride, for some reason Rob was also unable to do it, so we should get another happening soon up here, I'm off to the 24hr this weekend but I'd be keen to do one soon after.
John.

After the weekend have to say I'd forgotten how nice that Wingello sniggle is - put it on the list for sure. It's a shame we didn't get to ride the whole loop I had planned, but have done the last 8 or so Km that was missed and know that's top stuff also. There must be 25Km or so of the stuff now with only very brief firetrail connections, take a look at some of this:

Fern Gully Wingello Sniggle Bayliss Beauty Pratiwi Wingello Sniggle Great Wall

About 2 hours South of Sydney, but well worth a look.

Hands down IMO is Stromlo. The relatively new trail called dingo decent is insane!

As is the 'beginners' DH track.

Rob's picture

Yeah, but shame Stromlo is 4 hours from Sydney Sad

goatman's picture

So is Sparrow Hill, but not a patch on Stromlo, IMO.
