Latest update from Hornsby Council:
Most stage 2 trail areas are closed. Please observe closure signs and barrier tape. The rest of the trails are open (about 4 km).

Do you have more information?

This just in from SNORC:

Stage 2 Trail Opening on 22/6 has been Postponed Until Further Notice.

Following the cancellation of the original opening of the mtb trails, a number of riders ripped down the barrier and trashed the soft clay sections. These had just been repaired and hardened. Unfortunately the sections had not firmed up and so the damage was pretty bad. Council/SNORC hasn't been able to repair the damage as yet and so Council have postponed the official opening indefinately. Stage 2 will be open to riders once it dries out. We will keep you posted re a new date for the official opening event in the future.

Sad to hear - with the decent weather forecast for the next week hopefully the stage 2 trails will be back open soon.

Trail maintenance day July 5th, 2pm. Lots of people needed - I'll be there.

If only a few people riding it while wet can do weeks worth of damage, is this clay the appropriate base to be using for the affected section of trail?

On the face of it, you could be forgiven for thinking this demonstrates it is the wrong choice.

Or am I on the wrong track here?

I think you're on the right track by the sounds of things Hawkeye
I've never been there so only going by what I hear
But I would be of the opinion that clay is not a good base for a trail

I would think, being a professionally built trail, that this would be rock armoured to help to make it more weather resistant, or at least mixed with other coarser materials to make it firmer and more resistant to water

If it is just clay with nothing else to hold it together, even when it dries, once it gets heavy rain it will be unrideable again - wouldn't it?

Rather than all the finger pointing, arguing, signage, and internet solutions, I would be asking the builders why, on an authorised heavy use trail, more thought is not given to wet weather proofing
Or do they have something else in mind for the future

At the moment we're mushrooms and left to bicker amongst ourselves as the blame seems to lie with us

I saw a ute driving down the fire trail today hopefully it's the trail builders fixing the tracks and adding a better soil solution

I agree Andy. We rode it a 3-4 weeks (when it was open) and there were some really soft clay bits down low.

These need to be rock armoured or it will close every time someone spits on the ground!!

Just so I understand, is the stage 2 still closed today?

I was going to head out there but if it's closed I might postpone the trip. I know CBD are supposed to be having an open day there tomorrow.

Edit: It appears much of stage 2 is still closed - https://twitter.com/HornsbyMBT

Well I just got back from OMV and sure enough stage 2 is all closed apart from the new blue climb.

The trails that are open are in good condition though.

also the green trails are open, which aren't too boring surprisingly.
Not sure why the blue trail down the back is closed as there are no wet patches or damage to it untill the black trail joins on to it
The gap between the black trail and the second half of the blue trail is a mess though, i didnt even want to walk through it
