Manly Dam update for 12 Jul

Manly Dam
Status:
Green/Open

Rode around today and all open and good. No major difference to the part between the fire trail & that rock shelf descent that has claimed a few scalps (19th hole?) - a few of the step downs have a rock ledge to make them a bit more gentle. Past the rock shelf drop they have made a sort of sandstone road to smooth out the bit between the rock shelf and the park at Allambie. It's similar to what they've done above the golf course below the rock garden descent.
Also, just before the 19th hole rock shelf descent, after the timber ladder things, they have put a sign for intermediate to go right and do a u-turn down to the rock shelf descent (what I've always done) and Advanced to go left. Advanced still comes back down the rock shelf.
Hope that makes sense.

Do you have more information?

If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.

Rode on Sunday morning, the amended section at Allambie is much better, more flow with a little lip where the log 1ft drop was. I like the Black line addition of a little kicker if you stay hard left after coming down the rock shelf.

Also to the knob who put a rock on the step down on Advanced line of the new section leading down to golf course rock- don't! Came over that section (with pace you don't grind your front cogs, or just go a half foot to the right) and just missed the rock which had moved further right and into that landing zone. If you don't like it, there is a blue line now.

As this is the busiest MTB track in Sydney http://flowmountainbike.com/features/australias-... it would be great to see an expanded schedule of works to cover the entire trail in preparation for the increased traffic once Bantry bay opens.

If you like to do the dam early - look out for a bunch of runners this sunday:

It would be even nicer to see an expanded group of volunteers.

The turnout the last couple of times has frankly been embarassing.

Kudos to the guys who turned up, your dedication was appreciated.

To the rest, what needs to happen to get people along?

Are you referring to the trail run or was there a volunteer maintenance day on the weekend?

Are you talking about a recent volunteer maintenance day...? Trailscapes, in that flow article elude to them being involved in ongoing maintenance also. It would be great to see volunteer days included in that. Happy to come along to the next Maintenance day.

My response was to the comment about "it would be nice to see an expanded schedule of works" (paraphrasing). Yeah that would be nice. Funding is limited. Everybody wants something for nothing. So what are you prepared to do to make that happen?

Response to the last couple of maintenance days posted on nobmob was piss poor.

Hawkeye,

Its unfortunate when it comes to build days that there is often a low number of volunteers. However you have to consider that:

- Not every MD rider looks at NOBMOB.
- Not everyone (who rides MD regularly) sees the track work posts.
- Not everyone who sees the title of the post is interested (they don't ride there / often enough).
- Not everyone who reads it understands the importance of trail days.
- Not everyone understands the damage caused by riding in poor conditions / riding around sections instead of walking or learning how to ride them / skidding / general wear and tear and therefore don't think about trail upkeep.
- Not everyone can make the build days and last minute things do come up.
- Not everyone can be bothered to attend.
- Not everyone has a decent moral compass.
- Many, many people will come up with a decent excuse to no bother.
- Just as you get in the office, there are always people who won't bother because that know that there is always someone out there who WILL do the work.

Where else is the build day advertised?

At a minimum, if you want a decent turn out you will need to:

Advertise in all local bike shops and get them to actually talk about it. If they can turn up (even one shop represented per build day), that would add even more impact.
Ask same shops to put it on there Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / other SM site.
Put signs up at MD at least a month before the build day.
Mention it to everybody you stop to talk to whilst doing a lap (unless they're Strava overlords).
Ask council or similar to provide a post build BBQ.

Etc.

Good luck with it.
