Looking for new MTB shorts.Coming from old Fox rangers with built in liner that i have worn to death.

Any recommendations? what are people wearing and happy with?
They all look like board shorts to me, lots with no liner so do you wear normal roadie knicks under as a separate liner?
And whats the reason they all have belt loops? cannot see any point in that.
Not too keen on the Enduro way below the Knee length style either..

Cheers,

I have no idea but I'm pretty fat and my weight fluctuates a bit so a ratchet type adjustment system or having belt loops is good for me, the shorts with velcro adjustments suck!

I'd be keen to hear hear people's opinion as I've tried a couple of pairs of lighter shorts but hated them and went back to DH shorts for pretty much all my riding.

I use Kathmandu MTB shorts. Inner liner and above the knee, velcro side adjuster with no belt loop, grey boardies basically. They are having a sale now, around 70 big ones I think.

Stay with the Rangers. If they served you well stick with them

Wore the seat out of a basic pair of Fluid MTB shorts ($70 from Anaconda) in 12 months and quickly needed a pair of shorts one Sat morning.
Picked up Pearl Izumi Launch shorts at LBS. Outer has combination stretch and non-stretch material, three big zippered pockets, and Velcro adjustable waistband with some elastic in it. Inner is some really light stretchy material (not Lycra) with a big padded chamois.
They are knee length (might avoid the tan line this summer!) and a bit exxy ($120) but are light, breath well, comfortable and look good in plain black.

I got a pair of these a while back from the Manly store and can't really fault them. Removable inner and good adjustment. The sizing can be on the small side though.

Have been riding with Fox Ranger shorts for about 6 years,
the two pair i have are now totally trashed, they have
served me well carn't fault them. I now have purchased a pair
of Troy Lee Designs ACE SHORTS they are awesome leave the Fox
shorts for dead fit and quality are a cut above Fox.

Changed from Fox to Bellwether recently. Externally pretty similar, internal knicks, chalk and cheese. Bellwether all over fox. Pick them up for about $100-120

I tend to run bibknicks under separate trail shorts. MTB chamois tend to be pretty crap. Roadie bibknicks protected by trail shorts are the shizz.

The bibs make you look like a greek wrestler when your jersey is off, but they keep everything in place for maximum comfort. They don;t slide down, so no creases or loose sections to bunch up and chafe on long rides. No marks on me anywhere after yesterday's four hours in the saddle atyesterday's Shimano GP. Most of the elite field would have been using the same, sans trail shorts.

With my Giordana bibs I've been using a set of NZO trail shorts for years. They're comfortable, tough, and hard to kill. Worth the little extra.

Same as hawkeye. I have tried fox and TLdesigns and found the chamois pretty crap in each.

With Bibs you def get what you pay for and everyones arse is different. I find I really like the Castelli bibs with Kiss3 chamios but cant stand Santini or Sugoi Red.

Another advantage of the bib is they dont ride down so no chance of them getting caught on your seat when you lean back and trying and get back over it.

.. I've used a couple of pairs of NZO Dobies for years, still going strong. Wear bib or knicks underneath for a bit of extra padding. Drawstring waist (not sure if its the same in the new models) is good, although I've replaced the string in both. Good zippered side pocket for gels in races.

Im not a lycra person and like to wear shorts. But the benifets of proper cycling knicks make it a must for me so I buy my Knicks separate. I've been a fan of the cycling knicks found at www.aerotechdesigns.com It was because They catered for big mens sizes which is barely seen available. But now I've lost weight I'm still a fan.

I then wear basic quick dry shorts over the knicks. I like the Spalding brand shorts target sells. There is also a lot more variety at rebel etc. I have not been a fan of any mtb specific shorts yet.

How far are people riding before they start using knicks(?)

I love the Eleven Velo stuff, custom made to order in Sydney. http://www.eleven.cc

I also love knicks when riding and wear them under my baggies when I wear shorts. Again, I wear the eleven vela kit, worth every cent and it lasts.

Good quality bib knicks and Quiky boardies.

@fairy1

I don't like riding any more than 5km without knicks.

I personally found chafage to start very quickly without a good pair of knicks and Aussie Butt Cream.

teeps's picture

I have found the most comfortable combination for me that gives absolutely no chafage is skins compression shorts with any mtb baggys padding built in riding shorts. Fox have suited me the best.

The main hassle for me with normal boardies is snagging them on the saddle when the trail points steeply down. If you get caught and cant get back far enough it can go pearshaped, either from not being able to get back far enough or being distracted when your normal body english gets disrupted.

Much prefer the likes of NZO which have very high, non-snagging crutches.

I know that you dismissed Endura but I really like them.
I now have 3 pairs & their detachable liner is one of the comfiest out there, they are also tough with lots of thoughtful features like zipped vents, Velcro leg straps & a key clip.
The latest have a button & belt rather than silly press stud which pops open too easily (after too many pies).
The long gravity pants are the Humvee 3/4s but they do far more conventional ones like the MT500.

I don't ride with padded knicks.

The Endura Hummvee shorts are okay, although a little too baggy for me, hence why I read this post. The Endura Hummvees do catch on my Specialized Phenom saddle at times, the dropper post fixed that problem though.

I had a pair of the humvees and then changed to the Endura Singletrack shorts, which are a little shorter and tend to sit above the knee for me. I love them and they seem pretty bombproof. They have a few good little features too - the belt and button fixing is good for a man of my waist stature, plus the pockets have magnetic closures which saves you faffing around with zips.
