But the route to the city from the northern beaches by road is pretty dangerous. Anyone recommend a safe way from Dee Why to the city?

I'd go via Curly through Harbord to North Manly to hook up with the Burnt Bridge Ck Deviation bike path. From there you have a couple of options.

Here's the round trip I do regularly that keeps you out of fast-moving traffic. The sneak through Kirribilli does get a bit congested at times. If you'd prefer to avoid that, you can cross over Spit Rd at the lights at near the top of Parriwi and ride my homeward route in reverse.

Hope it helps.

If you want a guide, happy to hook up of a Wednesday and show you the lowest risk route.

I ride from Cromer to North Sydney.

The safe route has some hills.

Head up through Beacon Hill (many safe options from DY) and get yourself on the parkway through to Seaforth then drop down the back way through to the Spit, up Parawi and cross at the lights up the top near the servo and ride the signposted bike route through to North Sydney and then through to the bridge.

More hills this way, but apart from the parkway, that has a good shoulder, its pretty much minimal cars.

The biggest issues I've had are from the north bound 169 bus (I'm sure its the same driver over and over) and the occasional lowlife giving me a close shave on the parkway.

You can ride your MTB and get a lap of the Dam if your feeling fit and have time!.

A daily 60+ k's of commuting on the MTB with 1000M+ of climbing will have you snoring on the couch well before 9PM most nights, perhaps forgo that lap of the Dam and save the energy to prop up Hans statistical facts..
