Bye Nicole

I bumped into Nicole on Saturday during a Manly dam lap (whilst attempting the remove the majority of epidermis from my knees (but that’s not for here). I mentioned how well the recent maintenance day seems to have served the circuit and she agreed.

However she won’t be organising any more trail days as she is off to another position.

I asked her if there was another strong MTB advocate who could assist in organising future trail days but she wasn’t aware of any. I proffered the notion that we (NobMob) could run with this (instigate, plan and carry out the maintenance days) albeit with the attendance of a certified worker. She seemed to think that this had a possibility but it would need planning.

Just wanted to mention this whilst it was on my mind as if trail days start to slide, we face the risk of more “wet track closed” days due to worsening erosion / less upkeep and maybe even future possible closure.

Does anyone know the right people to approach to get this rolling (showing our pro-activity to the relevant authorities)?

Matt,

Great plan, Rob and I were surveying some of the problem areas at the weekend and thinking that some quite simple upkeep would help a lot. Much of the work could be done with shovel, mattock etc..filling in holes and creating drainage channels.

So perhaps contacting Nicole through email(on here I am certain) and getting her managers detail or the person who supports her efforts higher up.
A process may be something like this.
Nobmob authorised rep speaks with Dam rep to advise the proposed work to be done with a reasonably detailed plan of attack and outcome.
On approval Nobmob rep then seeks volunteers and follows Dam insurance process as is done currently.
Photos before and after to close off the work.

If necessary we could be limited to hand tools type work (for insurance or whatever) and then we could make recommendations on larger jobs to be done professionally.

Hi Guys,
Nice to see some enthusiasm from the nobmob crew for maintaining local trails. With regard to Manly Dam, MWMTB has been and continues to be very active in the management and maintenance of this track. Before going off on your own agenda might be beneficial to have a chat to the club so that everyone is working together....

Thanks Dave. I dont think the suggesting was to do our own thing. We would absolutely want to coordinate, and work with the authorities.
What does MWMTB get up to out there and what is the process you follow for organising etc.. let us know.

We're not quite sure how the track days will work in the near future yet, Nicole was the driving force within the dam management for these, we're keen to keep them going. A representative from the club used to regularly walk or ride sections of the dam to identify what areas needed work and what should be done. Some times we get what we want others not.

There has been a fair amount of money allocated for work on the track but a lot of this is likely to be done by contractors rather than volunteer labour.

I'm sure some volunteer labour would be welcome - it's gotta be a help to their budget.

Alchemist is right, when I spoke to Nicole on the last maintenance day before she moved on she said that the trail sections that run parallel to Cootamundra Drive and Southern Cross Way, that need urgent repairs, would be fixed by private contractors as earth moving equipment would be needed.

I would love for us enthusiastic MTB riders to get a chance to be involved in the designing phase of those works because I fear that if it’s left in the hands of the local town planner they may just pave the joint (sad).

The last thing a mountain bike trail needs is to be turned into a lap of Centennial Park Sad
