Tyre cross hatch trivia

At the Mont on the weekend, me and some team mates were shooting the breeze about the crosses that develop in/on the dust on the sidewalls of tyres.

Someone said- and it sounds like a wives tale- that it means the tyre pressure was perfect for the track. Someone else just said it happens all the time and is meaningless.

Does anyone know- or have any clues as to the cause and if it actually means anything?

I thought it happened when you run a low pressure and as the tyre deforms under braking and acceleration it leaves the marks.

I only have experience with Maxxis, but it only happens on wirebead tyres. My UST and foldable minions never do it, but whenever I use a wirebead minion it does...

The very small cross hatch pattern on Schwalbe sidewalls is the fabric of the tyre carcase fighting its way out of the rubber....
