Hello

I rode the Manly Dam mountain bike trail yesterday and was feeling good about the upgrades and changes from North Balgowlah through to wider trail parallel to Wakehurst Parkway. Then rode the top section leading to the long downhill and steep climb and was shocked by what’s been done to the track. It’s now a sidewalk.

I've been riding this trail for 25 years and was feeling great about the changes at the start of my ride then so bewildered at the dumbing down of the rest of the trail. I’m guessing i'll be told it’s to get fire trucks into protect houses, but a bush management plan could have dealt with fire risk potential, as this is common practices around the world.

Yours in bewilderment

All good and well to have a fire mitigation plan, but you still need to have an accessible trail so that the trucks can get in and perform the hazard reductions. Lighting up a hazard reduction in the middle of dense bush isn't a great plan. The main trail is also the only place to pull up a fire if one happens to start in the park and take a run towards Allambie Rd. Lots of the properties around Martin Luther Place etc. back straight into the bush.

Don't despair about the track, give it a few months, a bit of rain and it will be back to its usual rocky goodness.

There's another thread covering this subject, but in any case, if you've been riding the track for 25 years, you'll know that it's only temporary. Soon enough, traffic, erosion and other forces of nature will bring it back to what is was. At least until the next grading.

Jeeeeeeeez some of you guys go banging on like a bunch of old biddies!

If its too heart breaking you could go to Bantry Bay, Red Hill, OMV, LCNP, any of the NB trails listed on NOBMOB or any of the excellent "not quite yet legal" tracks that the Northern Beaches offers.

And what outcome are you hoping to achieve by posting up here? Don't like the changes, write to those who made them.

If I still rode MD, I'd be out there "helping" to get the track into an enjoyable state instead of prattling on like some tired old fart!

As an old school master used to say, you've got nothing to say and you're saying it too loud.
