Manly Dam update for 10 Dec

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Amber/Some Issues

Rode lunchtime 09/Dec.

Surprisingly very dry and in great condition.
I'd rate it amber only due to a few puddles.

A few minor puddles on the s bends just after Seaforth Bowlo. Also, a few minor puddles between the Golf Course Rock lookout up to the rock garden before the Trig Track. Nothing major - your tyres will get wet.
Cheers
Daisy

Do you have more information?

If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.

Please DO NOT ride around puddles (or other trail obstacles that you're not skilled enough to get over). This is how trail widening happens.

Go through the puddle or wait another day until it dries out.

I don't mean to 'step on anybody's toes' out there & apologise if my comments above were mis-leading or not entirely correct.
Personally, I try to keep to the edges of puddles but always keep to the track.....never widening.

I have edited my original post to remove bit about going around puddles.
I do not condone track widening.

Ride as you please and wear you want there are so many people winging about absolute rubish in this forum. The greatest threat is the local volunteer fire brigade with there continual campaigne to dumb down the dam. A few blokes riding around puddles is the least of our troubles....

on singletrack leads to trail widening and enlargement of the puddles and/or trail braiding.

I wish it was just a few riders. It's more like a thousand a week: http://nobmob.com/node/49416

Riding around puddles on trails leads to trail widening. This isn't up for debate.

Lets put into very simple terms.

- Riders go around a 1m wide puddle meaning they ride through grass or low scrub.

- Multiply this by lots (refer Hawkeye’s link). This bashes the bush down even more and eventually kills off the vegetation. Soggy Sydney soil suffers when ridden on by just a few riders.

- The vegetation (roots) hold soil together. Sydney has crappy sandy soil and so becomes very loose very quickly.

- The rain comes again and washes said loose crappy sandy soil away and leads to a puddle that is a bit larger than the previous one. Riders go around the puddle meaning they ride through grass or low scrub……

See where this is going?

So please extend some respect to those who either build trails or lobby for them. And do not post up ‘permission’ to partake in an activity that causes the trail to suffer and potentially places access to a trail under scrutiny from people who either want to, or can take access away.

Re Manly Dam being under threat from RFS, I'm happy to be corrected here but I was always told that the MTB track happened long after the reserve was first created. Therefore we, as a group, have been granted access to use the reserve. Therefore we need to adhere to their requests and rules and if we don’t, we run the risk of access being denied. They have taken access away before and can do it again.

If they (RFS, council or whoever) deem it necessary to make a firetrail safely and effectively accessible to fight fires, then what weight does “this bit of track isn’t as much fun now” have against the protection of life and property?

You're right, some people do wHinge about absolute rubBish on this forum.

You're one of them.

Remedy8, you couldn't be more wrong about "The greatest threat is the local volunteer fire brigade with there continual campaigne to dumb down the dam".

a) The Council have a legislative obligation to mitigate bushfire risk on land they own. To meet this legislative obligation, the park must be accessible to fight fires because many of the properties surrounding the Dam don't have a sufficient Asset Protection Zone behind them. Whilst the main fire trail was in need of some work to make it safely accessible should the RFS be called upon to deal with a fire in the Park, the RFS has nothing to do with the work done to the Dam.

b) If you'd like to speak to the local volunteer fire brigade about their "continual campaign" to dumb down the dam, why not go and have a chat to them? The local brigade that is responsible for Manly Dam is Beacon Hill. The station is located on Willandra Rd, just past the roundabout at McIntosh St. Two of the senior officers in the brigade are avid mountain bikers.............I am one of those officers.

Look forward to seeing you drop into the station to have a chat. I'd like to hear from you face-to-face about our agenda to dumb down the Dam. Would be news to me Sticking out tongue

Regards,
Chris Harmer

Um.. it’s a fire trail right? so unless they have run a bull dozer through the single track sections (as I’m sure they have not) then who really cares what they do to the fire trail?

In any case.. I’m sure some RFS guys will read this thread; so thank you RFS volunteers for putting yourselves in harm’s way and giving up your personal time to save people and property.

Respect x1000 from me.
