When you say it's due for a service... what do you mean by that? Is there actually anything wrong with the way it rides?

Things like the forks and rear shock are meant to be done very regularly. I don't know about anyone else, but I think the quoted service intervals on shocks are ridiculously short.

Don't know about where you are, but I also find service in many LBS a bit hit and miss. You often get a better job doing things yourself. Plus - there's the satisfaction of doing it and knowledge you get which could help you out of a jam if something brakes out on the trails.

You can probably service the bike and gears yourself. I do on mine anyway. If you have a carbon bike/components you can make sure that all nuts and bolts are torqued to specs if you do it yourself. Like rob said, there's a certain satisfaction on its own.

The only time I bring it to the shop is for forks and shocks servicing, as I don't know how to service those myself and not confident to try it out.

This cost me about $175.
I had to get the rear shock fixed because it was locked down. Two LBS told me that these shocks need to be serviced annually. (So does the manufacture's recommendation.)
However, none of the guys I ride with get their shocks serviced unless something goes wrong with them. These guys have been riding for 10+ years on MTB. So who knows who is right?

(I have a giant anthem as well.)

Stuck down shocks are easy to fix. Just needs a new seal kit. Plenty of Chube vids on how to do it.

If your bike is carbon a 2-20Nm torque wrench is essential. Pretty cheap at around $120 landed, including all the needed hex and Torx bits.

$99 for a service
$80 fork service
$80 rear shock service
then add seals if needed approx $50
